If you’re a dog owner, you may have noticed your furry friend engaging in a peculiar behaviour: scratching at their bed before settling down to rest. While this may seem harmless, it can be frustrating if it leads to damaged bedding or disturbed sleep.

In this article, we’ll explore the reasons why dogs scratch at their beds and how to stop it if need be. Additionally, we’ll highlight some dog beds that may help alleviate this behaviour, including making sure our dogs have quality beds like Sash Dog beds to sleep on.

why do dogs scratch at their bedsWhy do dogs scratch at their beds?

Dogs scratch at their beds because it’s a relic of a time when they had to dig holes in the ground to sleep in. Today they scratch at beds instinctively, to make themselves comfortable, to cool down, to “nest” or just because digging is fun!

Let’s take a closer look at each of these reasons:

    1. Instinct: Scratching is a natural behaviour for dogs, as they have evolved to dig and create comfortable resting spots in the wild. This instinct may carry over to their domesticated lives, leading them to scratch at their beds before settling down.
    2. Temperature regulation: Dogs may scratch at their beds to create a cooler or warmer spot to sleep. By digging down into the bedding, they can expose cooler or warmer layers of material, depending on their needs. One of the main reasons that dogs “thermo-regulate” is called conduction. This means when they dig into the cooler earth, some of their own body heat dissipates into the earth. Likewise, if it’s cold, digging a hollow spot acts as insulation.
    3. Nesting instinct: Some dogs may scratch at their beds to create a cosy “nest” for themselves. This behaviour is more common in breeds that were historically used for hunting or digging, such as terriers. Pregnant dogs will also typically dig in their whelping boxes when it’s nearly time for them to give birth.
    4. Anxiety or stress: Dogs may scratch at their beds as a coping mechanism for anxiety or stress. This behaviour may be more common in dogs who suffer from separation anxiety or who are dealing with other stressful situations.
    5. Digging for fun: it’s no secret that some dogs can amuse themselves endlessly by destroying something. Usually this means chewing, but digging can also be a great form of entertainment. Feeling something flip and sending stuffing flying everywhere is a bored dog’s idea of a great time.

How to stop dogs from scratching at their beds

If your dog’s scratching behaviour is causing problems such as damaged furniture, there are several ways to address it. Here are a few tips to prevent problem behaviour like digging:

  1. Provide adequate exercise: One of the best ways to alleviate anxiety and stress in dogs is to provide regular exercise. Make sure your dog is getting enough physical activity each day to tire them out and reduce their need to scratch at their bed. If you can’t seem to keep up with their energy levels, enlist the help of a Dog Walker or Doggy Daycare to help expel their energy.
  2. Invest in a comfortable bed: Dogs may scratch at their beds if they’re uncomfortable or don’t provide enough support. Invest in a high-quality dog bed that offers ample cushioning and support. Look for a bed that has maximum padding, like the range of Sash Beds. They provide a place of calm and comfort for your dog to snooze in peace. You can read more in our article on why SASH beds are highly recommended.
  3. Have your dog checked out by a vet: Never rule out underlying pain or discomfort as a reason why your dog may be restless at night and scratching at their bed. Dogs with arthritis or other physical issues may be scratching out of frustration as lying down may cause them pain. This is especially true if your dog seems restless at night.
  4. Offer distractions: If your dog scratches at their bed out of boredom or anxiety, offer them distractions to take their mind off of it. This could include puzzle toys, chew toys, or interactive games.
  5. Practice positive reinforcement: Whenever your dog settles down on their bed without scratching, offer them praise and treats. This will reinforce the behaviour you want to see and encourage them to continue to rest peacefully.

The importance of the right bed for your dog to help reduce scratching

If you’re in the market for a new dog bed, consider the SASH calming dog bed. The calming dog bed is designed to reduce anxiety and stress in dogs by providing a cosy, secure spot to rest.

Another benefit is that the beds provide a natural hollow that mimics the hollow a dog would dig for themselves in the earth. For many dogs, this is enough to discourage the need to dig their own hole to lie in.

You can read more in our article on how a calming dog bed works or see our breakdown on the best calming dog beds for your pooch.

Whatever you choose, make sure the bed is made from high quality materials and is plush and plump. Otherwise you may as well be asking them to sleep on the floor.

Dog Calming Bed BenefitsIn conclusion, dogs do love to scratch their beds and this is perfectly normal behaviour. They do it mostly out of instinct to dig a place to sleep in and to get comfortable. Help your dog with any boredom or anxiety issues they may have if the digging and scratching in their beds become excessive. A quality bed can also be the answer to their prayers (and yours), giving them a more comfortable and settled sleep, reducing the need to scratch.

Need help to expel their excess energy, or give them some company when you’re busy?

If you’re a dog parent and you have a social media account, chances are that you’ve seen advertisements for calming dog beds – but what are these products, and can they really soothe your dog’s separation anxiety?

Yes – a quality dog bed can offer psychological and physical support to your pup by simulating the sensory experiences that once made them feel safe as a newborn. Still, not all beds are created equal, and choosing the right one is important for your dog.

Explore the science behind the calming dog bed, and gain insight into the best beds available on today’s market.

What Are Calming Dog Beds?

The design of a calming dog bed supports stress relief in pups and can be helpful for dogs who experience mild separation anxiety. These beds work in a similar way to a weighted vest, providing a sense of comfort and security to dogs who may be experiencing stress or anxiety. They often work best with training (and calming supplements where necessary).

As the pet market continues to grow, so does the science-backed research supporting new and innovative designs for your pup. Some high-quality dog beds can encompass as much as 12 months of trial and research before the final design is released for purchase.

Do Calming Dog Beds Work?

Calming dog beds have science-backed evidence to support their effectiveness, and here’s why:

Puppies are born blind and deaf, so they are highly vulnerable and rely on smell and touch to decipher their surroundings. These first few moments of life can be understandably frightening for a pup whose primary aim will be to find its mother’s milk and seek comfort from her presence.

Imagine the relief when these vulnerable pups nestle into the warm surroundings of their mother and littermates. It is the first time they experience comfort and love in the world, and this moment sticks with them throughout their lives. Like humans, dogs associate sense with feelings.

For these reasons, the scent of fur and a warm cosy feeling are sensory experiences that your dog associates with comfort. In this way, a calming dog bed helps to recreate your dog’s initial experience of love and relaxation.

How Do Calming Dog Beds Work?

The primary purpose of a calming dog bed is to provide your pup with a relaxing space where they can feel a sense of comfort and security. Most of these beds have raised sides to simulate the burrowing experience and create a “cave-like” environment where your dog can feel safe. Quality manufacturers, such as SASH or pupnaps, understand the importance of a “burrow” design and ensure high sides to comfort and support your dog.

A calming dog bed limits sensory overload to help your pup relax. And providing your dog with a place to rest its head helps them to feel safer when they sleep. Part of the reason for this is that it mimics the sleep they would have experienced as a puppy when they had their mother there to protect them.

Calming dog beds don’t only provide psychological benefits; their structure also supports good health practices. Many brands, including SASH, pupnaps, and Snooza, design their beds with raised rims that support your dog’s neck and spinal alignment while they sleep. This design can also help to reduce muscle and joint pain, making calming dog beds popular for those who have arthritis, orthopaedic issues, and other similar ailments.

How Do I Know If a Calming Dog Bed is Suitable for My Pup?

Calming dog beds are ideal for providing any pup with a comfortable retreat. Still, they are particularly beneficial for dogs who display anxiety symptoms such as:

  • Hiding
  • Burrowing
  • Whining
  • Shivering (when not being held)
  • Panting (due to nerves)
  • Excessive jumping

If your dog is susceptible to nervousness, anxiety, or stress, there’s a good chance that a calming bed could help them feel more relaxed. These beds are ideal ways to combat a range of stress sources, including separation anxiety or a fear of loud noises. Providing a safe space for them to retreat is an excellent step toward providing an environment where they feel safe.

In severe cases, a calming dog bed will work best with training or calming supplements. If the bed alone is not enough to calm your pup, book a consultation with your vet, who can advise which supplement is best.

To help promote your pup’s relaxation, combine their plush bed with some calming practices. For example, gently stroke their face or body, rub their chest in circular movements or massage their ears.

What Are The Benefits Of A Calming Dog Bed?

As the name suggests, calming beds are a great way to help support relaxation in your pup. Still, it has several other benefits that make your investment worthwhile.

  • It uses high-side walls to replicate a dog burrow.
  • It can reduce joint pain, which is especially beneficial for older dogs.
  • The comfort of the bed allows your dog to sleep for longer.
  • Washable covers make it easy to clean up accidents and keep your pup’s bed fresh and clean.
  • Durable and long-lasting designs make quality dog beds an investment rather than a regular purchase – opt for a trusted brand, such as SASH, who guarantees quality, designs backed by thousands of happy customers.

Which Calming Dog Bed Is Best?

Generally speaking, a calming dog bed needs to provide two key things – raised sides for comfort and support, plus a soft fur lining for warmth and scent. Many manufacturers use faux fur, which they scent accordingly. As your pup uses the bed more and more, they will transfer their scent to the fur, making the bed even more comforting.

If you want a quality product for your pup, keep an eye out for some additional features, including:

  • Machine washable components for quick and easy care.
  • Durable undersides that increase the lifespan of the bed.
  • Extra soft plush feelings to increase your dog’s comfort.
  • Deep walls that make your dog feel protected.

The SASH calming dog bed is Australia’s number one product on the market, offering a soothing haven for your dog. The team at SASH knows just how important your pup is to you, and every product is designed with love and care to create a truly relaxing environment for your furry friend.

Key benefits of a SASH bed include the weighted design and 3x internal padding to help create a safe and calming place of rest to help reduce anxiety. An eye for detail and extra plush filling means this bed offers the optimum comfort for your dog. And SASH’s handy sizing guide allows you to purchase the perfect fit for your pup.

If you’re a big fan of your furry friend, there’s a good chance you’ve already seen Sash Beds boucle dog beds in action. With dogs all over Instagram, Facebook and TikTok falling in love with these beds, it’s great to see boucle making a statement in homes across Australia!

Of course, bouclé started trending in products for humans, not for pups, to begin with. With this durable fabric making a huge resurgence in 2020 that’s showing no signs of disappearing, the combination of texture and detail immediately adds warmth to all kinds of interior spaces.

The magic of boucle dog beds

Bouclé gets its name from French phrases for ‘curl’ or ‘loop’. With an almost fleecy appearance that’s the result of small loops in the yarn, bouclé not only looks super stylish, but it’s also a fantastic choice of fabric for many practical reasons.

After seeing the love boucle was rightly receiving in lounge rooms, bedrooms, offices and dining rooms across the country, the team at sash beds knew there was magic to be found in bringing this luxurious, cosy texture to the creatures that deserve the best: our beloved pups.

Sash’s luxury boucle dog bed is a stylish, timeless solution to unattractive dog beds or uncomfortable dog cushions. Not only do they look completely at home next to the most luxe of interior designs, but our beds provide the very best of sophisticated snooze times to your pup.

If you’re yet to bring this beauty home, here’s five reasons why you need to invest in a boucle pet bed.

1. The perfect combination of comfort and practicality

You don’t have to sacrifice comfort for the sake of practicality. The Sash boucle dog beds are designed to cradle your dog with ideal neck and spine support, complemented by a supportive foundation of extra padding that gives your dog a sense of weightlessness and ease as they snooze.

Our beds pass the ultimate test when it comes to how happy the dogs are with your purchase: some customers report that their dog’s so comfortable, they won’t get out of bed, even for dinner!

Forget about trying to hose out smelly dog beds or wrestling with impractical covers. With hidden zippers and a low liquid absorption cover, the Luxe Bouclé Bed makes keeping things clean a breeze. Washable covers mean you can keep your dog’s favourite nap spot pristine by throwing them on a quick cycle – they can be fresh and back on by bedtime.

2. Designed with attention to detail

Is your pup the kind to turn in circles every night as they settle down for sleep? We can’t blame them for having a nightly routine that’s all about getting cosy.

You’re not alone – and it’s just one of the reasons why our Luxe Bouclé Bed is complete with a non-skid base. Every inch of our bouclé pet beds are designed with great care and attention to detail.

With a focus on making sure your dog’s as comfortable as possible, we deliver beds that help them feel comfortable, settled and safe, each and every night.

3. Complementary decor = better bonding time

Let’s face it: nobody wants an ugly dog cushion in the middle of their lounge room.

If your dog’s current bed or cushion is in a forgotten corner, far away from family activities, there’s a good chance your dog would prefer to lie on the floor close to their humans, rather than settling into bed on their own. Science has proven that dogs exhibit varying degrees of separation anxiety when they’re not with their humans, which is all the more reason to give our furry friends a safe, comfortable space that’s all theirs, right in the heart of the family action.

By designing a bed that’s beautiful and complementary to a wide range of interior design styles,  it brings dogs and their families closer together, making sure everyone is comfortable as they enjoy quality time together. This is also a great solution for owners who are looking to keep their dogs comfortable, while also restricting their access to the family loungeor their own beds!

Put your dog at ease with a sophisticated, elegant Luxe Bouclé Bed that looks so good, it’ll become the centrepiece of your entertaining area!

4. Scratch-resistant durability

We’re here for the pups that like to work hard and play even harder. All sash beds are made with durable materials that are built to last, even for the most excited and active of pups.

Combined with the machine washable cover, every inch of this bed has been brought to life with a focus on sustainability.

No matter whether your dog’s a digger, a scratcher, a lounger or a snuggler, the Luxe Bouclé Bed’s built out of materials that will see your pup through thick and thin for years to come.

Forget the rigmarole of bringing home uncomfortable beds, only for them to sit unused, or padded beds that are quickly destroyed. With the Luxe Boucle Bed, your pup will find themselves right at home.

5. The best bed for the best pup

We’re all a little biased when it comes to believing that our dog’s the best in the world, right? The best dogs deserve the best rest, ensuring they can run, play, explore and snuggle to their heart’s content.

By investing in a Luxe Boucle Bed that’s designed to support your pup’s health, rest and well-being, you can bring the best of comfort and cosiness into your home.

Support your dog’s healthy, happy daily routines with a boucle bed that’s all about them, and enjoy the beautiful tie-in with your own interior design choices at the same time!

A holiday isn’t quite the same without our furry friends by our side. Whether it’s a staycation somewhere nearby or a sojourn a little farther afield, it’s important to ensure your pup’s safety and comfort. That’s where finding the right dog carrier comes in.

When looking for the right carrier, there are a few things to keep in mind. In this article, we’ll take you through the ins and outs of pet carriers, why you need one, and the best ones available right now.

Do I need a dog carrier?

You might be wondering whether or not you actually need a dog carrier. Depending on the size of your dog, the size of your car, and the length of your trip, a dog seat belt, crate or barrier might be a better fit.

While dog seat belts are good for short trips (for example, driving to the local dog park or vet), pet carriers are a better choice for longer journeys. They work particularly well for small to medium-sized dogs, restraining them and protecting them while still being comfortable.

There are a few different types of dog carriers, each with its own set of pros and cons. The most common ones you’ll find are the following:

  • Hard-sided dog carriers. Typically made from plastic, these carriers are very sturdy, making them the go-to choice for Owners needing to transport their pets via plane. The downside is they can be quite heavy and don’t pack away as easily as other types of carriers.
  • Soft-sided dog carriers. These lightweight carriers are popular among frequent road-trippers thanks to their versatility and ease-of-storage, as they’re often also collapsible. Products like the SASH Dog Car Bed are perfect if you need a portable bed and a carrier in one.
  • Dog backpacks. No, we don’t mean a backpack for your dog (though that would be extremely cute). These backpacks are designed for Owners who love bringing their pup on all their adventures, from hiking to mountain biking and everything in between. Of course, the downside is that, if your pooch is on the heavier side, carrying them can become quite fatiguing.

As for those times when taking your pup on holiday with you isn’t an option, you can always rely on an experienced Dog Sitter to keep them company. Even better, it gives them a fun holiday of their own!

Considerations when choosing the perfect dog carrier

Regardless of what type of pet carrier you opt for, there are a few things to keep in mind when making your choice.

  • Safety. The most important factor to consider is, of course, the safety of your fur baby. Dog carriers are not much use unless they’re secured to the vehicle (or, in the case of a backpack, to you). Look for a carrier that can be fastened to the seat – ideally using the car’s seat belts – to prevent it sliding around.
  • Comfort. Once safety is taken into account, it’s all about making your four-legged friend comfortable. If you opt for a hard-sided carrier, you’ll want to get some blankets (or even cushions) to keep them snug. Soft-sided carriers are a bit more comfortable by nature, and some even have padded walls.
  • Size. Speaking of comfort, you’ll want to measure your dog’s height from the ground to the top of their shoulders when standing. Use this measurement to ensure the carrier isn’t too big or too small.
  • Budget. You don’t have to spend much money to get a decent dog carrier, but you may find that spending more gets you a more durable, higher quality carrier. Generally speaking, prices range from $50 to over $300 for a large carrier.
  • Airline approval. Air travel with pets isn’t nearly as common in Oz as it is in other parts of the world, but if you’re transporting your pup across states (or perhaps even countries), you’ll need to ensure your chosen carrier is airline-approved.

It has generous side bolsters, built-in safety buckles, and even has carry handles for when taking in and out of the car. The best bit: it protects your car from pet hair, dirt & scratches!

If you’ve been looking for ways to improve your pup’s sleep, you know there’s a lot of advice out there, from changing your dog’s exercise routine to implementing special bedtime rituals. But, there might be an even easier solution: calming, supportive dog beds. With a variety of carefully designed styles, you can find a personalised dog bed for your doggy dreamer, whether they’re a fussy puppy, a timid rescue, or a young-at-heart senior.

best dog bed for joint support

But, how exactly do calming dog beds work? What should you look for in one of these floofy poufs, and how can you make sure that your dog is getting the most out of it?

In this article, we’re getting cozy with the most comfortable dog beds you can buy. So get a bedtime story ready and let’s take a look at Mad Paw’s favourite dog beds!

First of all, what are calming supportive dog beds?

Picture a floofy, cosy, plushy ball of comfort that your dog can sink into like a cloud. You’ve got yourself a calming dog bed.

The shape, filling, and outer material of calming dog beds work to ease your dog’s anxiety by mimicking their favourite sleeping spots, whether that be in the arms of their beloved Owner or back with their wiggly littermates. With soft plush and plenty of squishable support, your pupper will be surrounded on all sides with warmth and a feeling of security.

Which kind of dogs enjoy these beds?

Calming and supportive dog beds were originally designed for dogs suffering from anxiety, or those that get sore after a day of bounding around at the park! This means they’re ideal for dogs who struggle to relax when they’re alone, elderly pups, those that are super active, or even recovering from injuries! If your dog already tends to seek comfort by asking for snuggles and curling up in tight spaces, they’ll be perfectly suited for this style of bed.  And especially when combined with other anxiety-soothing methods, these dog beds are a great tool for encouraging relaxation and promoting a comfortable night’s sleep.

While all breeds can enjoy a supportive and calming dog bed, those with a background in digging may be especially drawn to them. Dachshunds and Westies, for instance, may be the most enthusiastic about burrowing right into their new bed. As long as you can teach them not to dig too deep, they’ll be happy as can be in a calming bed. And it’s not just the digging doggos that enjoy a calming dog bed. Dogs who need some extra support, such as sighthounds like Greyhounds and Borzoi, can benefit from ultra plush or memory foam beds.

So what are our favourite dog beds?

Just like our doggos have different personalities, tastes, and quirks, they also have their own sleeping preferences. Luckily, Mad Paws has tried and tested *cough cough* a FEW dog beds… and here are a few of our favourite comforting and supportive dog beds:

SASH Beds Luxe Bouclé Bed

The Luxe Bouclé Bed is for the puppers who deserve a bed that is as glamorous as it is comfortable. This bed features a round design and oversized supportive rim perfect for dogs who like to snuggle up rather than splay out when they sleep. And, the fleece-like boucle exterior is so soft and inviting that you can forget the days of fighting for space on the sofa. With extra padding to keep your pup perfectly suspended during sleep and deep walls for head and neck support, the SASH Boucle Bed combines luxury and style for the most enthusiastic loungers.

Orthopaedic Memory Foam Bed

Nap time isn’t just an opportunity for your pup to dream about chasing rabbits and going to the dog park. It’s also an important part of your dog’s muscle and bone health. Orthopaedic memory foam beds give your pup the rejuvenating sleep they need to regrow tissue, build strength, and keep their joints flexible. On the outside, the SASH memory foam bed soothes your dog to sleep with a soft microfibre covering. And on the inside, the perfect balance of support and ease from the highest quality double-layered memory foam will relieve tension for a more restful and recuperative sleep.

The Memory Foam Bed is also a great alternative for dogs who may be too excited by a bed that looks like their favourite plushy. And, because this bed offers a rectangular base, it can be a good option for dogs who enjoy spreading out when they sleep.

The Original Calming Bed

The Original Calming Bed was SASH’s first contribution to luxury dog beds, and the design continues to be popular with puppers of all sleeping styles. This pouf-like furry bed gives your dog the sensation of sinking into a cloud with ultra plush filling that cradles your dog to sleep with support on all sides. And, its gorgeous long fur exterior looks amazing with any home aesthetic.

Best Calming Dog Bed from SASH Beds

Not sure about your dog’s sleeping preferences? Give them options!

You might find that in winter, your dog likes to snuggle up in a cozy bed like the Luxe Boucle Bed while on warmer days, they’d prefer to spread out on a larger surface like the Memory Foam Bed. Just like you might enjoy a few different places to relax in your home, your pup will appreciate sleeping options, too!

What should you look for in a calming supportive dog beds?

If you are ready to add a calming dog bed to your pup’s sleep schedule, here are a few things to keep on your checklist:

  • The right fit for your dog’s size. You might wonder how to choose the size that is right for your dog. What you’ll want to do is measure your pup when they’re in their preferred sleeping position and match those measurements with the dog bed size. You can, of course, opt for a bigger size (especially if your puppy has some growing to do), but in general, the more snug the fit, the cozier the doggo
  • Made from high quality materials. If your pupper likes their calming dog bed, they’re going to spend a lot of time in it! So, you’re looking for high quality materials that are built to last and won’t lose their form over time. To really pamper your pup, you also want the faux-fur to be absolutely luxurious
  • Washability. Inevitably, your pup is going to track mud into their bed or dribble a bit of slobber as they drift off to dreamland. So, you definitely want a bed with low liquid absorption and machine-washability to keep it nice and clean
  • Added bonus: something to fit in with your home decor! It’s recommended that you put your dog’s bed in the area of the house where you spend the most time. Not only do dogs want to be around their favourite humans when they’re home, but this will also give them a sense of comfort and security when you’re away. As such, you want a dog bed that is designed to blend in with your existing home decor. It’s not a requirement, but you’ll be glad you found something stylish!

What else can you do to help your dog sleep better?

Giving your dog an amazing bed is a great first step in encouraging better, more restful sleep. Here are a few extra ways to make sure they get the most from their new sleeping setup:

  • Keep working on lowering your dog’s anxiety. As relaxing as calming dog beds are, if your pup is suffering from anxiety, it’s a good idea to tackle the issue from a few different angles. This might include desensitisation training or talking to your vet about clinical treatment options
  • Find the right balance between exercise and mental stimulation. All dogs need some amount of daily exercise and mental engagement to encourage a more stable sleep schedule. Finding the right levels of physical and mental exercise will depend on your unique dog, but if your furry friend tends to be wound up with energy at night, it’s a good indication that they could use a bit more stimulation during the day
  • Think beyond the bed. Your doggo will have a much more restful sleep if you can provide them a dark, cool, quiet environment. Whether they’re curled up for a nap or settled in for the night, resist the urge to cuddle them so that they can rest peacefully

Is your dog dreaming of calming dog beds?

Now that you know the ins and outs of calming supportive dog beds, will you buy one for your furbaby? These cozy, cloud-like poufs of comfort might be just what your dog needs to curl for a calming snooze, and your pup might already have one on their wishlist!

Dogs are just plain adorable when they’re sleeping. Whether they’re cuddled up under a blanket or splayed out on the living room floor, it’s hard not to feel happy when you see your pooch having a peaceful snooze.

But did you know a dog’s sleeping position is also a form of communication? The more we pay attention to those signs, the more we can learn about our dog’s mood and confidence levels.

Let’s analyse 6 dog sleeping positions:

In the past we’ve looked at what we can learn from our dog’s barks, body language, and facial expressions. With this guide, you’ll also be able to find out what your dog’s sleeping position says about them!

Your Dog's Sleeping Positions Can Tell You Much About Them

Position #1: The Sleeping Superman

Dogs that fall asleep belly-down with their legs stretched out in all different directions are keeping themselves poised for play. As soon as nap time is over, they’ll be ready to pop up and join the fun and games.

This is a common position for puppies who can’t wait to play once this sleeping business is done.

Position #2: Belly Up

Your dog’s sleeping position, with their back to the floor and their legs in the air, is a sign of ease and confidence. The belly and underside of the neck are two vulnerable parts of the body that an anxious dog would want to protect. Your dog, on the other hand, is comfortable enough to show them to the world.

This is also a position that helps your pooch to cool off.

Unlike the Belly Up position, this sleeping style indicates that your pooch wants to protect themselves. Otherwise known as the ‘donut’, for some dogs this indicates anxiety but for others it’s simply the warmest and most comfortable position.

If your house is cold, this might be your dog asking you to cover them with their favourite blanket.

Position #4: The Side Sleeper

Like the Belly Up position, this style means your pooch is happy and comfortable. Some fun variations that you might see are upper body on the dog bed and the lower half on the floor; a side sleeper on the kitchen floor where it’s cool; or a side sleeper right on the couch. These are all happy doggos.

Position #5: The Sleeping Cuddle Pug

If your dog likes to snuggle into your arms, plop themselves down on your legs, or simply sleep next to you, you have yourself a Cuddle Pug. This is a good thing! This behaviour comes from when your dog was just a little puppy, cuddling with his mom and siblings.

When your dog cuddles with you, they’re showing that they love and trust you completely.

Position #6: Lion’s Pose

When your pooch is sleeping with their head on their paws, they’re sleeping lightly. This is common in dogs when they are in a new environment or shy in general. It might be a good idea to work on confidence builders so that your pooch can rest easy.

+ Some Bonus Dog Sleeping Positions & Habits

Now that you know more about your dog’s sleeping positions, let’s consider some other quirks they may display around bedtime.

  • Circling before laying down. Dogs will turn around in their beds before plopping down to sleep because of their genetics. Wolves in the wild turn in circles as a way to make a comfortable doggie bed in the dirt, snow, or grass.
  • Digging or covering up. Some breeds, like Dachshunds or Scottish Terriers, are more likely to look for a cozy blanket to tunnel into before taking a snooze. This hearkens back to their early breeding as burrowing hunting dogs. Providing these dogs with a crate or a bed with high rimmed edges is a great way to give them a similar experience as digging their own den.

The next time your pooch drifts off to dreamland, pay attention to some of the sleeping positions and habits we mentioned in this article. You’ll learn a lot about what’s going on in your four-legged-friend’s head!

You might think it can’t be done. That you can’t find a way to train your dog to sleep through the night. That you can’t find a reprieve from your puppy’s ruckus and roughhousing at all hours of the evening.

However, while it may seem impossible now, it absolutely can be done. Your dog can learn to go to sleep when you do and wake up with you the next morning. And after a restful night’s sleep, you’ll both be ready for the day’s adventures!

8 ways to help train your dog to sleep through the night

#1: Consider your dog’s age

Don’t worry – we’ll soon jump into some helpful tips on how to train your dog to sleep through the night. But first, it’s important to lay out the impact of age on doggy sleeping patterns.

Puppies before four months, for instance, may not be able to sleep through the night because their bladders aren’t strong enough to last.

Similarly, senior dogs may need more potty breaks, especially if they’re on specific medication. Some older pups can also experience difficulty sleeping due to chronic pain or cognitive decline. So, while these tips can certainly help make your senior fur baby more comfortable, it’s important to be patient and set reasonable expectations.

#2: Make sure your dog is getting enough exercise

Ever notice that you enjoy a deeper sleep after an extra busy day or an intense gym session? Your dog feels the same way.

That’s why one of the best ways to train your dog to sleep isn’t actually a training tip at all. If you’re able to provide them with enough exercise throughout the day, you might find that they’re already in full snooze by the time you start feeling sleepy.

Something to remember, though, is that it is possible to over-exercise your dog. The key is to find the right balance for your dog’s breed and age so that they’re tired enough to sleep without overdoing it. To learn more, take a look at our article, Are You Exercising Your Dog Too Much?

#3: Create the perfect snooze zone

When it comes to sleep, we have a lot in common with our dogs. We need a cosy bed to curl up—so do our dogs. We need to close the curtains and turn off the lights—our dogs also sleep better in total darkness. We want to drown out all noise—yup, our dogs also like to sleep in silence.

So, the first thing that we want to do is make sure our dogs are sleeping in the ideal environment. They should have their own comfortable bed, or kennel, set up in an area of the house that is quiet and dark. Make sure that you can cover up the windows so that your pup isn’t tempted to play watchdog all night. And, you might choose a room of the house that isn’t right next to the front door.

If your doggo is one to play solo fetch or run around with a squeaky toy all night, you might want to remove these items. Instead, leave your dog with a quiet, relaxing comfort like a soft plush toy.

#4: Be strategic with meal times

It’s a good idea to feed your dog a few hours before bedtime. There are a few reasons for this.

First off, mealtimes are high energy ordeals. Puppers get excited when they’re about to dig into a human-grade dog meal, and may be ready to play or go for a walk afterwards. Then, as the digestive process starts to work, they relax and get ready to snooze.

About four to six hours after the meal, your doggo may be ready to go out for a bathroom break and settle in for the night. So, feeding around 6 or 7pm is a good time for most families who will go to bed sometime between 10pm and midnight.

On the flip side, you don’t want to feed them too early, either. A healthy adult doggo will experience mild hunger signals about 8 to 10 hours after their last meal. Once that tummy really starts grumbling, maybe 10 to 12 hours after their dinner, your pup may feel the urge to wake you up.

We should note that every dog’s digestion is unique. It may take some time to find the right feeding schedule to ensure that your dog is able to sleep through the night without potty breaks or morning wake-up calls.

dog-eating-food#5: Go potty right before bed

This tip is one of the simplest and most effective ways to train your dog to sleep through the night. It will prevent them from waking you up in the early morning hours, and make them more comfortable and ready for sleep.

When you take your dog out for the last time, remember to keep the energy low. This isn’t a sprint around the block, which could trigger your dog to think, “play time!”. Instead, it’s a relaxed stroll with the specific intention of going potty.

Make sure that your dog has enough time to relieve themselves completely.

#6: Have a night-time ritual

Dogs are amazing schedule-keepers. They learn to predict when their local Dog Walker will take them out. They keep an eye on their internal clock to know when their beloved Owner will come home from work. And you can teach them to anticipate bedtimes too by setting up a nightly routine.

This should start with about an hour of relaxation before bed. This might mean putting the toys away, save for one calming chew toy. It can mean turning the lights down low and cuddling up on the couch to watch something relaxing or read a book.

And, when it’s time to turn in, lead your pup to their bed and say goodnight. Wait until they are sitting or laying down before going to bed yourself. It may take a couple of tries, and a couple of treats, for the first few nights, but eventually, they’ll come to anticipate this nightly ritual.

Don’t be surprised if your sleep improves with your nighttime routine! We can all benefit from a little relaxation before bed.

#7: Ignore your dog when they try waking you up

To be sure, your dog may try to wake you up as they adjust to the new sleeping routine. And, they might have learned that the more ruckus they make, the more likely you are to wake up. This attention-seeking behaviour can create a hard-to-break loop.

So, as much as you can, try to ignore your dog when they are making noise at night. If possible, keep them out of your room to send the message that you’re not available.

If you can’t ignore them completely, or you feel that your dog might hurt themselves in their distressed state, you can get up and lead them back to their bed. Don’t yell or punish your dog – otherwise, they’ll likely become more agitated.

Something to remember when you train your dog to sleep through the night is that the process can take time. Your dog will eventually learn that they cannot get your attention by playing, whining, or howling at night. But, it may take a few uncomfortable nights.

#8: Consult your vet

If you feel that you’ve tried everything, or that your dog isn’t sleeping because they’re in pain or sick, make sure to check in with your vet.

They may be able to prescribe appropriate medication or give you personalised tips to make your dog more comfortable.

You can look forward to a future of good sleep when you train your dog to sleep through the night!

The next few months will take repetition, consistency, and a good deal of patience. But once you’ve learned to train your dog to sleep through the night, you’ll both wake up happy and ready to take on the day!

Do you have a pup who won’t sleep still? Maybe they sleep on their side, legs moving and kicking, mouth twitching, even barking or whining.

It leads one to ask: “do dogs dream?” And if so, what are they seeing in their sleep? Enjoying a visit with an experienced Dog Boarder? Chasing the garbage truck? Is it a nightmare?

We’re all curious about what goes on in that little head of theirs as they drift off to sleep. In this article, we’re going to answer the question “do dogs dream?”, and assess what they dream about.

Sleeping Dogs

To “do dogs dream?”, the answer is simple: yes!

In a nutshell, dogs do dream! Maybe this isn’t news to you if you’ve seen your dog flat out running in their sleep. The next question, then, is why.

Well, dogs have a brain structure not unlike that of humans – although it’s obviously a bit smaller. And we’ve done extensive studies on how and why humans dream. We still don’t know the why definitively, but most scientists agree that we dream as a way of processing information that we received while awake.

If you learned that you have to give a last-minute presentation tomorrow, for instance, you might dream that you slept through your alarm and someone cut off all of the left sleeves from your work shirts. Not all of our dreams make logical sense, but they tend to be based on what happens in our waking lives.

So, how does this translate to doggie dreams? What do dogs dream about?

Your pup doesn’t have the same complex thinking process that you do, but they still receive information that will need to be stored for future use. Instead of information involving deadlines, responsibilities, and philosophies about life, your dog is likely grappling with things like where they left their favourite toy, the rules about eating out of the rubbish bin, and when they’ll be able to go to the dog park.

And, one of the most prominent things on your dog’s mind? Well, you, of course! You probably feature in your dog’s dreams quite a lot. Your dog might dream about that fantastic moment when you walk through the front door every evening, or the time that you shared food off of your plate. They probably also dream about the time you yelled at them for chewing up your favourite shoes or barking at nothing at 3 in the morning.

Are there other factors that affect a dog’s dreams?

Interestingly, different breeds may dream different things. Bird-hunting dogs, for example, are likely dreaming about looking up in the sky for flying objects. Other working dogs, like Dobermans or German Shepherds, may dream about protecting the household against intruders and keeping their Owners safe.

Age also plays a role in dreaming in dogs. Younger pups, who are processing a ton of new information every day, are more likely to dream than an adult dog. Older dogs also tend to dream more, perhaps because they spend more time sleeping than younger dogs.

How can you make sure your dog has sweet dreams?

Well, just like with humans, it’s not possible to eliminate bad dreams altogether. However, there are a couple of things that you can do to make your dog’s sleep comfortable and cozy so that they can drift happily into dreamland.

Here are a couple of tips that will, hopefully, encourage sweet dreams for your pup:

  • Plenty of exercise and play time. The more your pup’s day is filled with fun and excitement, the more likely their dreams will be too! This can also include treat training that will stimulate your dog’s brain and provide them with plenty of fun mental challenges. Ensuring they enjoy their daily dog walk will also make a big difference.
  • Lots of love and cuddles. If you know your pup dreams about you, make sure to lather on the love! Grooming is an excellent way to strengthen the bond between you and your doggo.
  • No distractions, please! When your dog starts to run and even bark in their sleep, the first instinct is to pet them and try to calm them down. But the best thing you can do for your dog is to allow them to sleep through it. What may look like a nightmare to you may be your doggo happily running through a field of butterflies. In other words, allow them to snooze on their own. If you do have to wake your doggo up, try to do it with a calm, soothing voice.
  • A good quality bed. Rather than letting them lay on a cheap bed that’ll go flat, invest in a plush bed – like a Calming Dog Bed – that gives them a cocoon-like feeling. This will allow them to really settle and dream their favourite doggy dreams!

The verdict to “do dogs dream?” Dogs do dream! And they dream big!

When your doggo sleeps, their dreams act as an important part of the learning process. They may dream about that long walk they went on earlier that day. They may dream about cuddling up with you on the couch. Or they may dream about that pesky neighbourhood cat. Regardless of what pops up during those sweet little snoozes, it’s important for you to give your little one a quiet place to sleep soundly and dream big.
