Every time summer rolls around, it means trips to the beach, picnics in the park, matching sunnies for you and your dog, and, of course, plenty of delicious ice cream cones! But wait, can your dog partake in the age-old tradition of ice cream on a hot day? Are there dog ice cream alternatives that are actually as tasty as the real thing? Or should you cast the idea of doggy ice cream out the window once and for all?

Start packing your summer adventure bag (don’t forget the sunscreen!), and we’ll give you the scoop on ice cream for dogs!

Can dogs eat ice cream?

Unfortunately, whether a dog can eat ice cream is not a simple yes or no question. Just as we mentioned in our previous articles on milk and cheese, dairy products fall into a gray area. For some dogs, even small amounts of dairy can lead to stomach upset. Others can gobble up an ice cream cone that fell to the floor without a trace of tummy distress.

But no matter how your dog reacts to ice cream, there are a few reasons why this summer treat is a less than ideal doggy snack.

  • Lactose levels. Milk-based ice cream tends to be quite high in lactose, which many dogs lose the ability to break down once they reach adulthood. This can lead to discomfort, vomiting, or diarrhea, which will definitely hamper your dog’s summer plans! Now, ice creams made with Greek yoghurt can be a pretty good fix for this problem, as they are more easily digested by puppers with a lactose intolerance
  • High fat content. To be sure, fat plays an important part in a dog’s diet, promoting coat health and cognitive functioning. But your pupper should already be getting the perfect amount of healthy fats from their diet! Studies show that a diet plan with too much fat can lead to weight gain, pancreatic inflammation, and circulatory problems. And most ice creams, even those made with milk alternatives like almond milk, are quite high in fat
  • Added sugars. What would ice cream be if it weren’t so deliciously sweet? Unfortunately, the added sugar that makes us savour an ice cream cone on a hot day is the same thing that makes them unhealthy for dogs. Meanwhile, sugar-free alternatives sometimes use xylitol, which is toxic for dogs
  • Flavours and toppings. As you probably guessed, chocolate flavoured and chocolate-chip ice cream is a no-no for dogs, but there are many other flavours and toppings with their own health concerns. Raisins, hazelnuts, maraschino cherries, syrups, and salted caramel swirls may also pose their own risks to your pup

As you can see, ice cream is simply not the best snack for your pooch. Maybe you can share a small spoonful of ice cream from your cup, but definitely don’t order Fido his own waffle cone.

Feel bad leaving your pup out during the family outing to the ice cream parlour? You might consider setting up an equally exciting adventure for your pooch with their favourite Pet Sitter!

Can you give your dogs ice cream flavours that aren’t dairy-based?

Nowadays, most ice cream shops have plenty of non-dairy ice creams to choose from, so can your pupper have a sorbet or fruit-based scoop?

Certainly, these non-dairy options solve the issue of lactose intolerance which is great. And, because they’re fruit-based, they will be naturally lower in fat than creamy flavours.

But, as we mentioned, the high levels of sugar in ice creams mean that even sorbets should be served in extreme moderation. Share a small taste, but don’t overdo it.

How about specially-made for dog ice cream options?

As you can see, most ice cream intended for humans is, well, just that – intended for humans. So, why not seek out dog ice cream, intended for dogs?

A quick Google search can point you in the direction of local ice cream companies who offer dog ice cream, with flavours like peanut butter, vanilla or chicken (sounds gross, but your doggo will love it!)

Or, if you’re looking for a DIY option, you can easily make dog pupsicles right at home with nothing more than an ice cube tray, some fresh fruit, peanut butter, and low-sodium chicken broth. Take a look at our article, Frozen Treats for Dogs, to learn how to whip up these easy dog ice cream alternatives!

Want your pup to enjoy their DIY ice cream on the go? You can use their favourite Kong or other treat stuffer as your dog’s ice cream cone. Simply fill the Kong with your dog ice cream and freeze it overnight. Then throw the whole thing in an esky with some ice so it stays nice and cold until the entire family has an ice cream cone in hand!

What are your thoughts on dog ice cream?

As you can see, whether or not dogs can eat ice cream will depend on the doggo, the type of ice cream, and how much you’re willing to share with your pup. At the end of the day, you always want to make the best choices for your dog’s health. But, with some creativity, you can be sure that your dog isn’t missing out on the summer ice cream fun!

What does your dog think of dog ice cream?

Why do dogs need grooming? It’s certainly not a question you would expect our earliest dog-domesticating ancestors to ask. The dogs of their day were, well, wolves. And their coats were just fine on their own without fancy brushes, baths, and regular cuts. Can you even imagine lathering up a wolf with fresh-smelling doggy shampoo? You might not make it out with all your fingers!

So, what happened over the last few thousand years to change that? In other words, why are our modern canines such doggy divas about coat care?

In this article, we’ll talk about how humans changed the course of hairstyle history, and of course, what that means for Dog Owners today!

dog groomingWhy do dogs need grooming? Because the King said so!

Dogs have been lauded as status symbols in Europe for well over a thousand years. Hungarian Vizslas, for instance, were often given as gifts of high honour between kingdoms. In Ireland, legend has it that Ailbé, the Irish Wolfhound, was so treasured that an argument over his ownership started a war! And by the time that Henry III of France came to power, no one batted an eye at the fact that he carried his three Bichons in a basket around his neck.

Of course, European rulers weren’t the only ones with impressive-looking puppers. Chow Chows were once owned exclusively by the wealthiest families in China. Their guarding duties were secondary to their primary purpose of intimidating visitors with their beauty and power (and price tag!).

Not only were these highly prized dogs given the best food and the cosiest kennels, but they also enjoyed the pampering of dedicated pet groomers. Whether they were sitting alongside the throne, repairing diplomatic ties abroad, or intimidating enemies, these royal doggos had to look their best.

Not all dogs were living in the lap of luxury

The vast majority of dogs throughout history did not receive the royal treatment. Instead, they were bred to perform certain jobs for their Owners. Some were personal protection dogs, others bred to hunt vermin. Sheep herding and livestock guarding was about as common as hunting and scent tracking. And because dogs were bred to fit such a wide range of job descriptions, they also needed the right uniforms to do their jobs well.

The Komondor, for example, has a naturally wooly white coat that allows them to blend in perfectly with a flock of sheep—quite clever for a dog tasked with guarding the pack from wolves and other predators! The Poodle sports a coat specially designed for their former role as waterfowl hunters. That sculpted curly do was essential for providing them with buoyancy and warmth in the cold rivers of the German countryside.

Other dogs were bred to have a coat as low-maintenance as possible. The Australian Cattle Dog is one such pup; their Owners were much too busy tending to the herd than grooming their doggos.

Everywhere you look in the dog world, you’ll find that coat type and grooming needs hold secrets about a breed’s working background!

Why do dogs need grooming today?

In the modern world, a Schnauzer no longer needs an impressive beard to protect them from the rats they once hunted. And a Papillon doesn’t need to be looking their best for an appearance at Versaille. But grooming is still a common practice for our household hounds. And there are a few different reasons for that.

The first one is simply practical. Humans have always loved doggos. But, nowadays, we’ve taken it to a whole new level. We welcome our puppers into our homes, our cars, our offices, and even our beds! So it’s really no surprise that we want them to be clean, even if they’d rather be caked in mud their whole lives. Plus, regular grooming goes a long way towards reducing the amount of shedding that ends up on our furniture and clothes….well, for those of us who don’t own super shedders, that is!

Grooming is also a way to keep our doggos happy and healthy. Regular brushing can prevent uncomfortable or painful matting and tangles, while also giving us a chance to spot and remove parasites. It also helps to distribute our dogs’ natural oils and shake out loose dead skin and hair follicles. Other grooming tasks, such as ear cleaning and tooth brushing, are absolutely vital to canine health

The last reason we groom our dogs today is for aesthetic purposes. We pouf up the Poodle pompadours, comb out the silky Saluki ears, and sculpt the Fox Terrier beard as an homage to the work that breeds have done for us for generations. Whether they’re conforming to breed standards in a dog show or simply strutting their stuff around the neighbourhood, we humans just love a throwback.

Inspired to help your pup to look their best? Here are a few grooming tips to get you started:

  • Learn more about your dog’s breed. If you’re looking to conform to your dog’s breed standard or want to know the best way to keep their coat healthy, learning more about their unique coat type will help. Fellow hound Owners, for instance, tend to have a range of tips for reducing the oily hound smell. Wire-haired pooch Owners may be able to offer advice about hand stripping. And if you’ve got a mix, the quality of their coat may just reveal who their ancestors are!
  • Make grooming fun (or at least tolerable!). All dogs need at least some grooming, even if it’s just the occasional bath or nail trimming. You can make the process much easier if you start early and teach your pup to associate grooming with something good. For instance, you might give them their favourite treats or a special dog toy that only comes out when the clippers do. And, it’s usually a good idea to schedule your grooming sessions when they’re the most relaxed, like after a long walk or play session.
  • Feed your dog a high quality diet. Foods that are filled with natural fats like Omega-3s are a great way to boost your dog’s coat health. Consider switching your pup to an all-natural raw dog food so that they can enjoy a softer, shinier, and stronger coat.

Best Types of Dog Collars https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/best-types-of-dog-collars/ https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/best-types-of-dog-collars/#respond Thu, 21 Jul 2022 03:14:41 +0000 https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/why-is-spinach-good-for-dogs-copy/ All within the first few months of bringing home a dog, you might find yourself bombarded with questions like, what…

All within the first few months of bringing home a dog, you might find yourself bombarded with questions like, what are the best types of dog collars? Which brand of puppy pad is the most absorbent? Should you feed them kibble or raw food? What tricks should you focus on teaching your furry friend? And don’t get us started on keeping up with the latest doggy fashion trends!

Clearly, there are a lot of decisions to make (and rabbit holes to go down!) but it’s helpful to focus on one at a time. So, why don’t we start with something basic: finding the right dog collar for your pup. By the end of this article, your furbaby will have a comfortable, useful, and stylish piece of doggy wear to show off on their next outing with their dedicated Dog Walker!

Why is finding a dog collar so important (and so complicated?)

If you haven’t gone dog collar shopping in a while, or ever, you might be surprised by just how many styles there are. Dog Owners these days have their choice of flat, martingale, show collars, head leaders, and—yes—there are even smart collars. The range of options is both wonderful and head-spinning, and you might wonder why you shouldn’t just pick the cutest or most affordable.

Before you get swept away by the latest doggy trend, there are a couple of reasons why you should put some thought into your dog’s collar.

On the one hand, if you’re going to be attaching your dog’s leash directly to their collar instead of their harness, you’ll want to choose a collar that is comfortable, well-fitting, and not liable to break with normal wear and tear.

And, if you’re worried about your dog getting loose because of past experiences, collars with smart technology like GPS can be life-saving.

Finally, it’s important to consider how training will affect your collar selection. As we’ll discuss in the next section, the field of doggy science has made some major breakthroughs in the past few years when it comes to leash training methods. So, it’s a good idea to be up-to-date on the research before you buy a dog collar.

What are the best types of dog collars for training according to the experts?

Most of the alternatives to traditional flat collars fall under the umbrella of “training collars” or “behaviour-modifying collars.” From prong/chain collars to citronella collars to e-collars, these models have been used for many years to correct behaviours like leash pulling, barking, chasing wildlife, or not coming when called. But, are these the best types of dog collars for your pet?

The vast majority of canine behaviour experts, including the Australian Veterinary Association, the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants, the British Small Animal Veterinary Association and others, say no! According to their research-informed recommendations, collars that induce stress, fear or discomfort in dogs have the potential to damage the training relationship, trigger aggressive responses, and cause long-term emotional and physical damage.

So then, what are the best types of dog collars for training? The experts say whichever collar is the most comfortable is the one you should use for training! According to their findings, a standard flat collar or comfortable harness paired with positive reinforcement training is the best way to train any dog. Whether you’re looking to train recall, stop your dog from barking, or work through leash walking challenges, there are effective, humane ways to train your dog, no matter what kind of collar they have on.

What features should you look for in a collar?

As we’ve cleared up, the best types of dog collars are often the traditional flat collar design or something very similar. Here are a few design features that will ensure maximum comfort and durability:

  • The proper fit. When putting a collar on your dog, the general rule of thumb is that it should be snug enough not to slide over your dog’s head but loose enough for you to fit two fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar. When dealing with a growing puppy, remember to check their collar fit often and adjust as necessary!
  • Lightweight, moisture wicking material. Like the perfect running shoe, the best types of dog collars are the ones that won’t weigh your dog down. Look for breathable, light fabrics for a comfortable collar
  • Reflective strips. When it comes to collars, harness, and leashes, we say, the more visibility the better! Opt for bright colours and reflective strips to keep your dog safe in all settings
  • Breed-specific collars. Some dog breeds, such as Greyhounds and Salukis, may require collars designed for their unique build. Martingale collars, which tighten gently with pressure, are commonly used for sighthounds to account for their head being narrower than their neck. These types of collars should be used for safety rather than aversive training
  • Last but not least, style! Okay, okay, style is not the main consideration when choosing a collar. But, if you’re between a few options that are similarly lightweight and high quality, don’t shy away from the style that matches your dog’s unique personality!

Final thoughts on the best types of dog collars

The sheer number of dog collars available can be overwhelming to new and experienced Dog Owners alike. But, with the shift towards reward-based training and away from aversive methods, the choice is actually not as complicated as you might think!

Find a collar that is well-made, comfortable, visible, and—yes—cute! Because as it turns out, the best types of dog collars are the ones your dog enjoys wearing during your outdoor adventures, walkies with their dedicated Dog Walker, and positive reinforcement training sessions!

Which is more rewarding for the unattached dog lover: Dating or Dog Sitting?
In this article, Sydney Pet Sitter Odette McCarthy compares the two!

The other day I Googled ‘dogs and dates’. The first line I read was: “Dates should be shared sparingly, maybe one or two at a time periodically.”

I thought that was oddly optimised for Google, until I read the subsequent sentence, which also suited my initial intentions. “Too many dates can cause digestive upset.” Well, they sure can!

So if you’re interested in dating, what should you be looking for at this time in your life? Will Dog Sitting help you find what you’ve been endlessly searching for? Which would be the perfect partner you have been pining for – pooch or person?

Dog Sitting Better Than Dating

“Swipe left, sister. He’s not worth your time.”

Let’s go through a few scenarios and analyse whether a dog or a date would be a better choice.

Dog sitting v dating: Sharing food

Sharing can prove a difficult task with both a dating partner and dog. In this regard, I consider both of them more like sly snack snatching snakes, rather than soulmate or sidekick.

And if you refuse to share, it’s hard to know who would be more offended. A partner may be more vocal about it, but a pooch may incessantly tap-tap-taperoo at you or give you literal puppy dog eyes.

At the end of the day, there are many types of food that’s toxic to dogs, so you’re actually doing the right thing by not sharing with them.

In this case, it’s better to dog sit than share your food with someone you’re dating.

Dog sitting v dating: Being your authentic self

One major plus on the pooch side is that they will never allow for an awkward moment. Unnatural banter and dastardly dates will be a thing of the past. In fact, doggos hold no judgements against you. You can wear what you like, get a crazy hairdo, watch whatever shows you like – all without being concerned what your other half will think. Unlike dating, dogs makes no judgements based on looks. They’ll be more impressed with the fact that you, this incredible human being, are spending time with them!

If you’re late or postpone a date, your dog doesn’t get hung up… They only worry about how long it takes ’til you come back to see him. Doggo doesn’t care if you’re shovelling fries into your gob hole alone at 3am; they care only if some chippies might drop so they can join in the enjoyment. Minding a mongrel means not being categorised as ‘strange’ or ‘weird’.

I tend to engage in crazy chat to most people in my life, only a few of whom understand my meaning. You can talk, you can sing, you can be the Shakespeare of this generation to any pup and he will wag his tail just because you have been courteous enough to talk to him. No ‘nutty’ judgement nonsense.

Dog sitting v dating: Unconditional love & affection

Are you the type of person to be swept off your feet by a rose-ravished romantic rendezvous? Or does the thought of amorous activities scare you? Perhaps you can’t cope with the concept of somebody’s creepy, cringe-worthy caress over your clavicle?

With a bow-wow, the only bones you will have to bear are those from your beef brisket. There’s no need to attempt to impress with forced flirtation. You can even choose the amount of silence or sentiment you put into those long walks on the beach (or on your visit to the the dog park). The only thing you may have to deal with is how to help ease your dog’s separation anxiety

In short, there’s no mind games or faking emotions when it comes to dogs. Their unconditional love and loyalty to you is unmatched! Even if the dog isn’t yours, and you’re just getting paid to pet sit. Dogs adore companionship, so why choose dating over dogs?!

Dog sitting v dating: Cleaning up after them

For which partner are you ready to remove rubbish and riff raff? With either of the pair – be it dog or date – prepare to pick up doodads, mop up their mess, and do the dishes after their meals. Both can be there for you, both attempt to understand you, but who can keep tidier terrain?

I find a dog’s relationship intention is clear and succinct – companionship. In other words, they want to be with you. A partner, by contrast, can be persnickety. They may be after more than just emotional intimacy. There will be more to compromise. Maybe they’re just seeking a maid to manage their muddle, or maybe they just want to meddle with your mind. In whom have you met your major mess making match? Will it be man or will it be mutt?

The choice is clear, right?

Dogs are the clear choice over your next date.

With a dog there will be no muddy water… well, maybe just if you take them on a walk in Winter.  But, there’s no denying that a dog will provide unconditional love. Aside from food, shelter, cuddles, and on-demand dog walks, they will expect little in return.

When dating, a partner can be more conditional. There will the more to compromise, in food, in prudence, in romanticism and in clutter-some crib conundrums. In the end, I can’t see anything better in this world than being completely and utterly loved and accepted when just being your true and utter self… amirite?

With a colder than average winter upon us, it’s important to keep our furbabies warm. That’s why Sydney Pet Minder Odette McCarthy has highlighted four ways to keep your dog warm in colder months.

Keep Your Dog Warm in Colder Months

We humans are always rugging up during the chill of the colder months. It’s a far cry from the heat of the Aussie summer! Throwing on one of the fluffy, puffy coats I recently gifted myself with, I couldn’t help but worry about all the dogs who don’t have a covering of fur.

Whether you’re a Dog Sitter or a Dog Owner, you must ensure that the hound of the household is heated adequately during this nipper period.

4 ways you can keep your dog warm during Winter

Invest in a coat for your canine

It’s not only humans that need layers of wool or fur or fluff and puff in colder months.  That’s why you should make sure your pup has their own set of jackets and – why not? Their own sensational style! Once you’re both insulated, you’ll be more game for a Dog Walk. And with your pooch’s new wardrobe on display, it will be the paw-fect…catwalk if you will. Let them strut their fashionable stuff!

If you’re not sure where to begin, take a squiz at the Aussie online boutique Mister Woof. Or browse the collection from Dogue, where you’re sure to find unique outfits and accessories to warm your bow-wow. Jackets that cover your bestie’s belly are on the button as they trap in body heat, much like the human head. Aren’t you more toasty with your bonce in a beanie? Same as Doggo with a buried belly.

Where’s your bed at?

A nice plush bed will make a paw-some thaw-some endorsement this winter for your pup. The range of pet beds from online boutique, SASH Beds offer something for every kind of canine (or kitty cat, for that matter).

And, have you pondered the location of their bed? Consider how cold your Cavoodle might be if dog-napping on concrete or tiles. Such surfaces may be paw-fect for summer, but are freezing during winter. If here is where your hound hits the sack, consider raising the bed off its base using bricks or a small trampoline. Make sure the bed is away from any doors or windows that may be drafty. Perhaps your pad could do with some extra insulation, such as draft-blockers. Microwaveable doggy discs and snooze-time snuggle pads are also available for purchase to warm any Weimaraner, Whippet, or Westiepoo.Calming Dog SASH Beds

SASH Beds also sell blankets to provide the ultimate snuggle spot during winter. Their weighted blankets help reduce anxiety and create a cocoon that provides security. And, their luxurious faux-fur throws are perfect for pets who love some snuggle time on the couch. They double as a protective layer for your furniture too!

Indoor Inu

Just the other day I realised that, in the past few years, no doggos that I have met or minded have lived outside of the house. People truly treat pets as a part of the family, and that means allowing them indoors. So, if you are a Sitter, be aware that you will most likely be sharing half the heat with the hound. I have noticed most dogs enjoy a curl-up in front of the heater. If a heater is not available, they love to share body heat. This may answer the common question, ‘Why does my dog sleep so close to me?‘. So be the bestest buddy and let them snuggle up close to you, cosy on the couch or snug in your sack. It’s a win-win, warm-warm situation as you get your own living little heat pack too!

Time in the sunshine

I always used to love sitting on the school lawn at lunchtime during the winter months. Why? I had been sitting still and chill inside cold classrooms. On the grass, with the winter sun beating down on my back warmed me right through to my skeleton. The same goes for dogs in winter. How many times have you caught a pupper lounging outside on a sunny day? Make sure your pup gets adequate time to chillax outdoors and warm themselves from snoot to paws.

So if you think you’re cold this winter, spare a thought for all the puppers out there. Particularly the pooch sitting next to you. Make sure your pal is snug as a bug in a rug with a jacket, properly placed bedding, combined bosom-buddy body heat and adequate time in the sunny one shine.

Are you still working from home and struggling with the isolation? If so, top Sydney Pet Sitter Odette McCarthy has some tips for how life in lockdown can benefit your dog!

Life in Lockdown

Does Covid continue to have you feeling cooped up, cabin-fever style? While restrictions are easing, most of us are still confined with our canine. Of course, your pooch would kill for these circumstances to carry on. After reading these pup-tential points, perhaps you will want the world to remain this way as well! Make the most of life in lockdown and see how a pooch can make these remote moments paw-some.

Life in lockdown is a great reason to spend quality time with your furry friend

Life in lockdown is an exceptional excuse to hang with your bewhiskered bestie. A Cavoodle companion can enjoy their favourite dog food beside you while you wolf down your Weet-Bix. A Pomeranian provides a pal as you print out reports. Fido is a ready friend for a night of Netflix and Snuggle-with-the-Puggle. What bigger or more brilliant an excuse will you ever again have to spending time with your furry BFF? Being a socially lone wolf myself, I can state in certainty that minding a Mini Schnauzer, a Maltese Terrier, or any mix can make a difference to your mental merriment.

It’s a chance to give your pup the attention they need

Don’t be lazy and lie in bed – get the pup up! During these dreary days, a doggo can be your daily drive. You’ll be hounded to get up for a morning wee, or to prepare their breakfast. What other being would give paw-some reminders to get up, get dressed, and make a meal?! Listen to doggo and go for that joggo! You will both benefit from abandoning the house for a bit; in fact, you could use this time as a chance to work on their Dog Training. If there are any tricks or behaviours you’ve wanted to teach your furbaby, there’s never been a better time!

During life in lockdown, have some candid conversations about canines

During the WFH era, you can enrich social encounters in isolation and grease your cyber-gab with discussions about dogs. This is especially true of video meetings; whenever a conversation veers into awkward terrain, simply summon your furry friend to the camera. I promise you this: the moment your colleague(s) see your dog, your pow-wow will pivot onto the topic of pooches.

Indulge in dog-centric social media

One of the biggest perks of being a Mad Paws Pet Sitter is the chance to post furry content on social media. While living life in lockdown with your furbaby, you can double your dog-centric output!! See the likes and comments come pouring in when you post yourself with a teeny Terrier in a pink fluffy jacket, or a massive Mastiff posing together as though the two of you are about to drop the next chart-topping rap hit.

No matter how good you see yourself in a shot, a foxy fuzzball will always make you look more magnificent. And why not try your paw at creating a doggone account? On Instagram, Jiffpom the Pomeranian boasts over 10 million followers. Not too bad considering Jiffpom starred in a Katy Perry music video, is about one 1 twentieth of her size, yet holds over a tenth of her number of followers. Dig out the dirt on how distinguished your doggo can become and display them across the digital realm. In short, focus your isolated efforts on a paw-sitive pet project online.

One takeaway from this: If you have canines on the cranium, you won’t feel alone!

Have you ever found yourself Pet Sitting an energetic dog breed? If so, you’ll know that matching their energy levels can be a challenge. Luckily, expert Sydney Dog Minder Odette McCarthy has the insights you need to keep your feisty furbaby in fine fettle. Need a Dog Minder like Odette? We have A1 Pet Sitters in Toowoomba, Perth, Alice Springs, and all over the country!

Pet Sitting an Energetic Dog

When Pet Sitting an energetic dog, be conscientious when considering their breed. If dealing with a high-octane pedigree, you may need to know a thing or six. After all, some breeds have innate intelligence and a desire to work. Think German Shepherds, Huskies, Border Collies, Kelpies, and other sheep dogs. Think police partners, sleighing hounds, working wolves, and dog-boys in replacement of cowboys!

The energy is inherent in these long lines of lively learners whom are hell-bent on getting the job done. For this reason, such a doggo may bore easily. If they don’t receive the stimulation they need, they may bark incessantly, herd people, dig up the yard, or spread their Owner’s new feather cushions across the floorboards. To counter this, you’ll need to summon an animated energy to match their output. Here are some top dog tips for when you’re Pet Sitting an energetic dog!

  1. When Pet Sitting an energetic dog, learn the doggo’s daily routine

Daily entertainment is essential to tire an energetic dog, but sticking to their routine will settle them the fastest. Daily energy exertion, play, and tricks will only get you so far. Every Snuffle Puff should have a “calm down routine” at the same time every evening. This will decrease doggo excitement as they often shadow your movements and feelings. Decrease noise, opt for a soothing tone of voice, and limit excess activity. An early dinner, some company while laying by the TV, and a warm bed to climb into will make all the difference. Ensure their bed is soft and inviting and always remains in the same spot – possibly close to your own bed. Lastly, ensure a snuggly blanket and a couple of their favourite toys lay gently inside it, mirroring the comforts and smells of home slumber.

A Chihuahua I mind on a regular basis dozes off when I rub his tummy or stoke his head. Most dogs tend to begin to close their eyes upon a decent, loving stroke. Maybe the Mister or Mrs you are minding will love it too!

  1. Puplets in need of extra outlets

Dogs with high energy levels crave high-intensity workouts. There are plenty of ways to wear out your woofer – Dog Walks included. Keep things unpredictable with long-distance hiking, swimming, or throwing a toy into water in a game of ‘Discover The Dampened Dolly’, or ‘Wet Fetch’. Or, why not try your luck by entering your bestie in a dog show? My sister’s Kelpie, Ruby, has been in a few shows; completely perchance, won 1st Place in agility and height jumping against previous Best-In-Show badge bearers.

  1. Enhance their intellectual abilities

want to exhaust a peppy pooch? Stimulate their mind! I am surprised at how obedient most dogs become after the use of a clicker. Clickers mentally trigger a dog’s reward system, meaning they’ll know they’ll receive a treat if they act upon the click. The click is low-volume, yet captivating for a canine, used to entertain and teach new behaviours. Sound association can assist a dog and even calm mischievous behaviour. I used to use a loud click mechanism for my dear departed doggo, who would obsessively and incessantly bark at the back fence. Nothing got her running upstairs quicker (or at all, for that matter), not even the clinking dinner being spooned into her tin food bowl.

  1. Home Alone-style apps will help when Pet Sitting an energetic dog

a) Techno apps – When leaving your vivacious doggo for the day, consider a novel techno-toy for Fido to spot, sniff, and snuffle! There are a range of different tech toys you can use; in my case, I depend on the Furbo! This two-way Pet Camera livestreams your dog to your phone, plus alerts you to unwarranted barking. Two-way audio means you can communicate with and pacify your perturbed pooch. My favourite Furbo Function is Toss-The-Treat. Fill Furbo with your pup’s favourite foods and use your phone to tap and treat them. A similar intelligent techno-toy is the Petcube, which incorporates a laser pointer. With the Petcube, your overactive mutt will receive entertainment from a light you handle from your mobile. But beware – this can become more addictive than Candy Crush!

b) Interactive toys – Interactive treat-seeking shuffle toys, also known as Dog IQ puzzles, exist to stimulate a dog’s mental and cognitive training abilities. The tricky compartments dispense treats once your pooch solves a puzzle; in other words, they need to figure the deal for his meal! Plus, a difficult and effort-exerting version of the Kong is Bob-A-Lot, wobbling at an adjustable difficulty level.

c) Alternative toys – Toys that involve a sense of mischief and mystery are amusing for a dog! Stuffing bags with their favourite treats, or sneaking an empty milk container from the recycling bin to chew and chomp, are two simple DIY options.

My sister’s dog, Ruby, is lucky that her parents owns a farm, as she comes from a line of working breed Kelpies. She is let out of the ute to run the acreage and round up the sheep for her own amusement, tiring herself out tremendously (for the next little while). But rest assured, there are other ways to fatigue Fido! Dog parks are a good way to exhaust your Fido Fuzzball, being full of flea-baggy friends. Your shaggy shadow can go discovering somewhere new and exciting, hang around with other canines, be fatigued by other Mad Paws Minders, activate their intellectual abilities with learning and toys (including technical and interactive toys), and always sticking to a wind-down routine.

So what the mutt are you waiting for? Get to tiring out that high-energy dog!

Dog Social Life

“Come on, human. It’s time to paint the town red!”

Whenever I’m making social plans, a furry friend always factors in. In fact, mutts make me mingle! Today’s world presents an array of opportunities for a hound to heighten your involvement with humankind; after all, there is a wide dog-loving community that want to bond with pets and humans alike. Here are some ways to enhance your social life in a pet-friendly way!

Interactions in your social life can be easier with a dog

Are you going to a social event with your pooch? Expect your shaggy centre of attention to receive a greeting at the door before you! Awkward chitchat will also be a thing of the past as focus floods onto your furry friend, who starts the babble-ball rolling. Indeed, the topic of dogs is social super-glue. Who knows – your doggy could even double your chances of a date! A tail-wagging tip – a lapdog on your leash may lead to a lap-lover. In essence, a person with a pooch is perceived as approachable. Still unsure? Bring your pup to your next social function and watch how many conversations they start!

Spread the social life celebration with your furry celeb

It isn’t just friends who will flock to your furbaby. Your faithful big fuzz will become an esteemed member of your extended family. This boofy big cheese can’t help but shove their snoot in the spotlight on festive occasions, seize all attention in family photos, and star as a V.I.P. (Very Important PUP) of any celebratory card with their signature paw imprint. You will always have a compelling story if you featured your beloved bow-wow in a marriage proposal or wedding ceremony. To this day, I still babble about my brother-in-law’s bewhiskered Best Man and obedient ring-bearer beside him on his wedding day.

An excuse to connect with people in your social life

Throw your dog a party

Want a reason to bring your friends together? Give your dog a bone and throw them a bash! It doesn’t matter if this dog’s birthday isn’t for another 8 months. A party is the perfect excuse to join dogs, friends, and cake. What are you waiting for? Get socialising with fur and folk!

You’ll also have an excuse to boast your incr-EDIBLE baking skills for all hairy hounds and humans to enjoy.

Go to dog do’s

Have you ever been to a dog park? If not, you have been sorely deprived of one of the friendliest, funniest fields offered on this earth. Go watch the world of whelps and war-hounds congregating, cliquing, and clowning around. Before you know it, you will be involved in a puppo-convo with the other playful pooches’ parents. It’s a great excuse to talk and meet new puppers and peeps. Take the plunge at any local dog beach, pup-pub, floofer event, or canine coaching class!

Online social support can lead to a more dog-friendly social life

The digital world contains communal escapes from the reality of one’s everyday lives. Why not expose your dog-loving self to a dog-loving world online?

Social media sensations

A social media account featuring Fido and his funny, flattering photos is the modern route to a social life. A pup-load of people take more photos of their dogs than of their friends or families. If you are one of these people, use your animal obsession to connect with like-minded animal amigos! Create content and converse within a cyber community about canine commonalities. Swap cute pet snaps and videos, funny memes, interesting stories, and life hacks with a cyber canine community. In addition to learning more, your could promote your bushy bestie into the next In-Vogue Inu Instagram Influencer.

Pooch platforms

You can also link with like-minded masses through other online platforms. Involve yourself and your snuffler in doggo-dedicated forums and blogs. These provide exchanges through comments, questions, and the sharing of knowledge.

Meetup groups

If you want to meet in-person with other pooch-loving peeps, you can join an online group that regularly organises pupper play dates. This will provide the opportunity for both humans and hounds to gather and banter or bark. You can’t back out at the last minute, as you have to think about your fur child, not just yourself, and give him the chance to socialise and make new friends!

Appease others with an assistance animal

Consider making your pup an Emotional Support dog. This means you can share their feel-good vibes while visiting people in need of a bit of cheer. Alleviate some of the sufferings of strangers by socialising with your snuffling sidekick. Get to know people in a nursing home, hospital ward, psychiatric unit, or veteran facility. Watch them visibly light up upon your dog’s arrival and become open to chatting while patting. You will all feel the benefits of the companionship and affection being exchanged.

Canine companions can be cracking conversationalists

My greatest social fur-given gains have always come from pooches. A dog will always accept you and attend to you, offering companionship and comfort without complaint. Through good days and bad, they will provide a paw to cry on or entertain you with a sploot to make you smile. Any lonely feelings will be forgotten when you begin to gasbag, gossip, and giggle with your bewhiskered buddy. Tell him about your day away from them and listen while they show how much they have missed your company. Rebound quicker from any social rejection or humiliation as you come home and communicate with an animal who will accept all of you. A dog really is a person’s best friend!

I can’t express enough how a boofy being will enhance your social life. A dog will act as the icebreaker and commonality in social situations, quell any dogmatic drama, make you crave digital dog discussions and depictions, meet up with like-minded pupper parents, and spread your hound’s high spirits within the community. And don’t forget: they’re always there to provide the complete company of a best friend. So get out there and get your two exceptional souls socialising!

Do you have a furry client who simply refuses to sleep at night? Sydney-based Pet Sitter and writer Odette McCarthy has the solution for you! Should you require Dog Minders in Bendigo, Cairns, or elsewhere in Oz, why not search for a Pet Sitter near you

As with humans, doggo sleep is a necessity in order to function. Of course, if you’re Minding a dog, your chances of shaping their sleep will differ from those of their Owner. They have built a rapport around stability, security, and reassurance, which grants their pooches sweet dreams. As with human children, our doggos form attachments to their primary caregivers and tend to rely on them for emotional support and protection.  To give a pup the comfort they need to sleep, a Sitter must create their own bond of trust.

How to help a dog sleep at night

Don’t Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

So let’s understand something about the subject of stable sleep. When away from their Owners, some pups can settle soundly into slumber at their standard snooze time. Some other pups that I have tended to depend wholly on their Owner’s presence to drift off. Sadly, the absence of their Owner may make for an anxious, ambivalent, unsettled dog. Distressed without their human, these dogs may require a plethora of pacification to sail into snooze-town.

Create that Connection and Get That Canine Cozy for Sleep Time

To foster a good night’s sleep, a connection with your concerned canine is key. For this, the Meet & Greet is the first step towards their tail-some trust. At a Meet & Greet, a pup can perceive you part of their world without per diem pal present. By giving your furry client a chance to meet you first, they’ll be more likely to trust you come nap time. Besides beef, doggo needs to feed on reassurance, attentiveness, emotional support, loyalty, and comfort. In other words, give a li’l lovin’ to the li’l snuggle muffin! You also need here to learn if pup is acting his average self when with only you.

Keep Active and Busy During Dogtime Daylight

Beyond forming a rapport, playing games can further fatigue Fido. Playing catch, or hiding their favourite toy, lets your furry friend view you as an accomplice in their hijinks. The canine learns to connect, trust, and relate to you as their makeshift momentary Mumma.

Always be Attentive to the Pooch

More than all else, pay attention to pooch’s reactions! Are they showing uncharacteristic conduct, a dissonant demeanour, or anxiety? If so, they may be trying to non-vocally express something. In moments like these, ask yourself:

  • Is it time for a Dog Walk?
  • Do they yearn to solve, explore, or experience something new?
  • Do they need food or water?
  • Have they relieved themselves in the last few hours?
  • Are they lusting for comfort, cuddles, strokes, or scratches as they settle in with you?

In the evening, all your hound may hunger for is a heartfelt huggle from his minder-muggle. If you can recognise this, you can render the relevant resolution.

Stick to Their Schedule for Sound Sleep

Learn Fido’s daily routine and stick to it! After all, we want life to continue virtually unaffectedly in the absence of Fido’s favourite human. If Fides frequently plays Frisbee or fetch in the park, schedule sufficient time devoted to this. And once back at home, have some quality down time together. Remember, a little tummy scratching and a cuddle on the couch will go a long way.

Be Beddy Ready Before Sleep

Ahead of bedtime, lower noise, eliminate distractions, and speak softly and soothingly. Ensure pupper’s bedding environment is comfortable and homely. I suggest a bed or blanket from home to soothe their nerves. If they’re still a little active at bedtime, I recommend a chew toy. Like with a baby, a chew toy can appease a pup and tire them out. For instance, one Chihuahua I minded loved nibbling on his fluffy ducky until he drifted off to sleep, head resting on his ducky’s birdy body.

HUGE SIDE NOTE: never forget toilet time just before bed!

Allow Doggo to Acknowledge Your Presence

Many humans struggle to wind down before bed, and dogs are no different – especially when they’re away from their Owners. To prevent this, reassure the affable animal you are here for them and are not leaving. Woofer needs to acknowledge your nightly presence, so create comfort as the canine conks out. The above mentioned Chihuahua had trouble sleeping the entire first night I Pet Sat him. I placed him out of his basket and moved him my cozy cushiony doona, wrapping my arms around his tiny body all night as a sense of security. After that night, we spent five nights snoozling happily together, him in his ‘lil basket by my bed. If you’re not inclined to a bristly embrace, place your hand on pup’s back as they slip into slumber. Alternatively, you can gently stroke/scratch them in a repetitious, hypnotic manner. Hopefully they shall relax, dozing off contentedly.

If you have an antsy animal insomniac on your hands, imagine what it’s like for them. In the end, all Monsieur Mutt needs to hit the hay is connection and somebody to suit the Owner role. An amiable animal needs to feel a safe attachment, for you to be there to meet their every demand or desire. Pup won’t forget their Owner, so ensure their mind and body are active! As aforementioned, I advise you calm the chaos before bedtime and let the licky lad know you are always there.

In this feature, writer, pet expert, and Sydney Dog Minder Odette McCarthy details her top tips for Dog Walking.

The Rolling Stones once claimed, “If you don’t know how to do it, I’ll show you how to walk the dog”.

With this in mind, think of me as your modern-day Mademoiselle Stones. If YOU don’t quite know how to (efficiently) do it, then I shall be the one to illustrate to you how you may meticulously march that mutt. Below are my top tips for Dog Walking!

Top Tips for Dog Walking

Top tips for dog walking:

Be prepared

As ‘The Lion King’ taught me when I was a baby: ‘BE PREPARED’. If the Doggo King is departing his doggo kingdom, you’d better make sure he is braced for survival. In other words, take the bare (or dog) necessities. I suggest a walking belt bag that can pack in exactly what you need.

  • Water – Get a dog water bottle that compacts into a nifty built-in bowl so pup can have a drink during their traipse.
  • Treats or a toy – Remain Top Dog in the situation (or any potentially adverse situation) by using your dog’s favourite toy or treats. By doing so, you can bribe them and keep their focus fixed on the footpath ahead.
  • Inu ID – Pre-empt any unforeseen situation. If the dog somehow manages to escape their leash or run away when leash-less, at least their designated, distinguishing collar will identify them.
  • Poo bags – Here’s a biggie… Picking up after pup is just common cleanliness and courtesy these days. How long it has been since you spotted white dog poo in the streets?  Foreign faecal matter once laid around as if the skies had rained cat’s and dog’s poos. In fact, there is a Facebook Group called “Where Has All The White Dog Poo Gone?” The simple answer is that these days, it all gets snatched up as soon as excreted. So scoop your li’l one’s poop! And please, don’t bag it then place it on that perfect LAWN thinking you have done the decent thing. Also, for doggo’s sake, don’t rush bathroom breaks. Imagine someone doing that to you! Walkie-time toilet is a luxury for doggo – comparable to you having the opulence of The Ritz’s toilette.

Possess a proper harness

The best harness to use on any dog is a front clip harness. This will make you Top Dog of the situation, giving YOU the control over their pivots and movements. If you’re a professional Dog Walker, ask Owners about the dog’s strength so you can become accustomed to their pull. Do NOT use a retractable leash, as this means less control for the Walker and increased instability under force or pressure.

Check out the harnesses, leashes and dog collars on Mad Paws Pet Store.

Walks are a dog’s sudoku

ALWAYS REMEMBER: Walks provide incredible mental stimulation for a dog (as puzzles do for the human). As such, allow their walk to be THEIR walk! This is THEIR time out – you can have yours when you please! Allow doggle to snuffle around at their own poochie pace. If you need exercise, embark reclusively upon your resolute route. The dog walk should be purely pup-paced. Think about how great it is to encounter nature – to smell the freshly mown grass, to view the blueness of the sky, to witness the worships from the wee willy wag tails! Imagine being a dog in this instance… while, as a human, you have six million scent receptors, dogs can have up to 300 million. Thank goodness dogs enjoy scents humans find insufferable.

Dogs experience the world through their wet little snoots. Just as we can derive pleasure from chatting, the cranial activity within canine ignites when snuffling around a new scene. Imagine someone pulling you away from a puzzle that you’ve almost completed. How would you feel? Maddened? Saddened? ANYBODY gladdened? Next walk, please ponder this perchance prior to pulling pupper from that stimulating scent they have picked up. Instead, allow them the opportunity to analyse the aroma.

finding friends while dog walkingTake note of timing and terrain

Keep your woofer walking wits about you! Remember these essential components of a dog’s life: dogs do not (typically, bar Paris Hilton’s canine clan) wear shoes, like you and I. Dogs can struggles to walk on some surfaces. This means all pupper paws are susceptible to hot pavement or sand or to possible bindies on the block. Make sure you’re mindful of the terrain for their tiny feet.

Also ensure you walk your Little Mister at an appropriate hour. Dogs sweat solely (and minimally) from their paws, and thus rely predominantly upon panting to cool their chassis creature encumbrance. As summer alights and the weather begins to blaze, ensure doggo’s dwelling departure is done at dimmer times of day; early morning hours or latter afternoon/evening. And always keep your walking belt or bag on you for hound hydration.

Know the Fido you are footing it with

Like you and I, pooches have particular personalities, which means each dog is different. Some have a persona that interacts well with people, pets, and progenies. Meanwhile, others can become standoffish and overly assertive. You need to know what you can about your dog before taking them on a walk. Can they be around other dogs in a dog park? Can they walk off the lead at all or will they become hostile at the sight of other people or children? Ask the Owner prior to your walk so you may be entirely ready for all situations.

Adhere to these appropriate adages for an amiable amble with your animal. Dog Walking doesn’t have to be strut along Struggle Street if you rely on these simple strategies. Be prepared with a proper pack, harness the correct harness, allow doggo to take their time, don’t be a dingbat (consider doggo), and realise this dog’s exclusive attributes. Every doggo is different, so attune into each and apply individual approaches. Apply these tips for Dog Walking, and your furry friend will enjoy a fabulous frolic!
