School holidays can be stressful for parents who are expected to fill the weeks with endless fun. This can be exhausting, not to mention expensive!

If you need a helping hand to take the fur kids off your hands, call on the Pet Sitting community at Mad Paws to help.

From overnight stays to dog walking, pet day care, house visits and more, your needs are covered.

Surviving school holidays with kids and pets

If you’d like to see if the kids and pets can keep each other occupied these school holidays (and hopefully allow you to get some work or chores done), then keep reading! We’ve created a list of fun activities your children can enjoy with your pets; either furry family members or temporary house guests.

Kids school holidays activities

Teach (learn) a dog trick

This can be a very rewarding task for older children as it requires patience and consistency – two skills that children often need to work on! Load your child up with dog treats and help them to choose one awesome trick they’d like to teach their fur sibling, then sit back and watch the magic happen! Your child will enjoy an incredible sense of achievement once your pooch performs the trick and they can tell anyone and everyone “I taught them that!”

Girl teaching a dog a trick

Build & overcome obstacles

Everyone has junk lying around that can be fashioned into a doggy obstacle course. A few bricks and a stick transforms into an adjustable jump. A plank of wood and rock makes a see-saw. This one can get as complex as your child’s imagination will allow! After planning and set up, your child and pooch will have hours of fun tackling the new home made course!

Host a mini dog show

Does your child have lots of friends with dogs? Why not get them all over and put on your own dog show? Each dog has to show their very best party trick and complete a series of tasks – sit, stay, come etc. Create your own judging panel and hand out prizes to one and all – best in show, the pup who tried the best, the funniest pooch etc.

Play dress-ups

Of all the activities between kids and pets, this one is reserved only for the more placid and playful pups! While some dogs don’t enjoy being dressed up in clothes and costumes, others don’t mind and will happily join the adventure of playing a character in a play or movie. Break open the costume box and let the fun begin!

kids and pets playing dress up activities

Enjoy story time together

Make school holiday activities for pets and kids productive with this idea. Dogs can make the perfect reading partner for younger children who are learning to read and feeling self-conscious. Everyone wins – your dog will be happy to lie beside their human and receive attention and your child will be happy to read to a new, novel listener. Research suggests children are more confident reading to dogs as they are completely non-judgemental too.

If these ideas still make the thought of school holidays overwhelming, or you feel you need some extra back-up to tackle 2 weeks in a full house, consider pet sitting or doggy day care. Although the team at Mad Paws can’t help occupy your human kids, they sure can take the lead and tire out you fur babies!

Or, if you’re going away these holidays and need someone to look after your pet, book a Mad Paws Sitter.

Enrichment toys for dogs have become a modern-day necessity for the average pet parent. Most of us would love nothing more than to stay home and play with our dogs, but the demands of work, school, and daily life mean most dogs have to spend many hours alone.

Even the most committed stay-at-home pawrent has to occasionally crate their puppy or leave their dog at home while they run errands. This is where dog enrichment toys become vital for our peace of mind. Let’s look at why interactive dog toys are key to happy dogs and list our top enrichment picks to keep our pups having fun.

enrichment toys for dogsWhy our dogs need enrichment toys

  • They’re essential for our dogs’ well-being

Enrichment toys do exactly as their name suggests; they enrich our dogs’ lives. In fact, studies confirm that enrichment toys enhance a dog’s welfare and quality of life and suggest that dogs should have a variety of toys to pique their interest.

Interactive toys stimulate a dog’s natural impulses to chew, gnaw, chase, and forage. They also keep their minds busy with the opportunity to solve problems in exchange for a reward. Not only do puzzle toys give your dog’s brain a workout, but they also allow your dog a positive sense of achievement.

Like humans, being able to solve problems and being rewarded for it is good for a dog’s overall mental well-being.

  • They prevent unwanted behaviours

The major reason we want to keep our dogs mentally stimulated is to channel them away from unwanted behaviours. While exercise, playtime, socialisation, and training are all key to a well-behaved dog, we can’t hover over our dogs all day to ensure they don’t fall into nuisance behaviours like digging, excessive barking, or eating our favourite pair of shoes.

Making sure our dogs have puzzle toys, chew toys, and other high-value items simply keeps them busy and provides them with a positive outlet. In other words, preventing our dogs from being bored is the number one way we keep our shoes intact.

  • They help prevent separation anxiety

Another reason that we can never have enough toys to keep our dogs busy is that it helps our velcro puppies who grow anxious about being alone. After all, not all problem behaviour is rooted in boredom. Dogs that suffer from anxiety and stress may resort to:

  • Urinating or defecating in the house
  • Excessive barking
  • Fear-related aggression
  • Destructive chewing
  • Digging

Some dogs can even injure themselves trying to escape when they are left alone or affected by loud noises or other stressors. This is why having toys ready to teach our dogs that being alone can be fun and to distract them during stressful events like thunderstorms is so crucial.

The 5 best dog enrichment toys we recommend

Luckily, interactive toys that stimulate a dog’s mind are plentiful on the internet and easy to have delivered to your door. Online stores like Pet Chemist and Waggly have fantastic ranges to pick from.

But in case you’re not sure what to get your canine, we’ve put together a small list of five doggy enrichment essentials.

enrichment toys for dogs
1. The KONG

No doggy toy box is complete without a KONG. The classic KONG remains one of the dog trainers’ and behaviourists’ favourite tools to keep our pups busy and engaged in their environment.

Kongs can be filled with treats, but a pro tip is to fill them with their dog’s dinner and a bit of broth and throw them in the freezer during summer. This makes feeding time a far more interactive experience and is great for soothing the gums of teething pups.

2. SmartyPaws Interactive Puzzler

We love slow feeders that utilise our dog’s problem-solving skills. Not only does this puzzle toy slow our grub guzzlers down when they eat but it provides them with plenty of mental stimulation and reward.

This toy has different difficulty settings, making it suitable for dogs of all ages, and a non-slip base to keep it still while your dog puts their mind to the task of getting those treats!

3. KONG Gyro Treat Dispensing Toy for Dogs

The KONG Gyro is by far one of the most interesting toys to hold an active and inquisitive dog’s attention. The spinning orb in the centre holds treats, and dogs need to paw, nudge, roll, or push the toy to get their reward.

It’s a great way to get a break while your dog plays independently. It also provides that essential mental stimulation that keeps dogs occupied to ease separation anxiety and boredom.

4. Tasty Bone Nylon Trio Bacon Chew Toy for Dogs

If you have a chomper who loves to gnaw and chew, we suggest the Bone Nylon Trio Bacon Chew. Made from nylon, it won’t damage your dog’s teeth, but the flavour will ensure that they get just as much joy from it as from a real bone.

The tough core in this toy is ideal for even the strongest of jaws, and it has the added benefit of doing some dental cleaning while your dog is chewing.

5. SmartyPaws Sunflower Puzzler

A great enrichment toy is all about appealing to your pup’s curiosity, and testing their problem solving skills. The SmartyPaws Sunflower Puzzler has three tiers that, when rotated, reveal the goodies hidden inside!

Help entertain and reduce boredom, giving them a challenge and ultimately a sense of accomplishment. Perfect for small treats or even kibble, to help slow down feeding time!

Final thoughts

Enrichment toys for dogs are not just a treat; they’re essential for dogs who need to spend time crated or hours alone at home. In general, they enhance canine well-being by stimulating their environment and channelling their natural instincts.

Whether it’s a KONG or puzzle toy, having a collection of different toys prevents your pup from getting bored of just one. Remember, providing our dogs with positive and interactive ways of problem-solving, foraging, or chewing is best to help soothe anxiety and prevent unwanted behaviours.

WorldPride is a global LGBTQIA+ celebration that takes place in a different city every few years.

WorldPride aims to promote and advocate for LGBTQIA+ human rights around the world.

Its inaugural ‘coming out’ dates back to the year 2000 in Rome and is a licensed global event run by InterPride, a network of over 400 LGBTQIA+ member organisations from over 70 countries.

What makes this WorldPride so special is that it’s the first time a city in the southern hemisphere has been chosen!

Spanning 2 weeks, from Friday 17 February to Sunday 5 March 2023 – traditionally the dates of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras – all are welcome to take part in a host of events across arts, sports, theatre, concerts, parties, First Nations programmes and Human Rights conferences.

The post Your Pet’s New Year Resolutions appeared first on Mad Paws.

A letter from your fur friend:

My human tells me that it’s almost time to say goodbye to 2022 and welcome in a brand new year. She said this is the perfect time to reflect on the last 12 months and decide my resolutions for 2023.

I didn’t understand what “resolutions” meant until my pawrents explained that they are a sort of to-do list or goals I want to achieve over the next year.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about 2022, and even though it was lots of fun, I think next year can be even better. If you and your pawrents are writing resolutions for 2023, here are some ideas that might inspire you.

Expand My Diet and Eat Healthily

Eating is one of my favourite things to do, but sometimes I get bored of the same foods day in and day out. When I asked the dog-tor whether or not my diet is important, she said that balancing my nutrition would keep me fit and healthy (which means I’ll have the energy to play lots more games) and could extend my life (which is pawsome because it means I’ll get to see even more new years)!

So one day, when my pawrents went to work, I barked at Alexa and asked her to find me the best doggy foods around. She suggested I try something called “Dinner Bowl” by Mad Paws, which is fantastic because it has recipes crafted by pet nutritionists (and those humans know exactly which foods I need to keep me healthy).

My pawrents said we could start ordering from Mad Paws THIS week, making me very excited! They said the meals are nutritious, affordable, and easy. I don’t know what “affordable” means, but I’m guessing it’s something good. And I’ve chosen my first bowl already! I’m going to have the “Live Laugh Lamb” packed with tasty chunks of meat and vitamin-rich vegetables like carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, and spinach.

I chose this because it looks yummy, AND I like the name. Living and laughing are everything I want for 2023.

Socialise More

I’m sitting by the window, waiting for my humans to come home and thinking about how much fun I will have on tonight’s walk. Do you know why I enjoy walkies so much? Not only do I get to explore hundreds of new sights and smells, but I also get to see other dogs – and that’s pretty fun!

My humans are pawsome, and I love them with all my heart, but playing with them is not the same as playing with other dogs. Sometimes my human talks about her “friends” and how much she enjoys spending time with them. I think I might like to make new friends and spend time with them.

Then, as I watch through the window, I see a human walk past with not one, not two, but five doggies! I barked over to them and asked if she was their mummy. They said, “No, she’s our pet sitter.”

“Pet sitter?” I thought to myself. “I wonder what that means…” Well, I’ve discovered exactly what it means, and it is paws-itively brilliant. Mummy can sign up as a pet sitter, and other doggies will come to our house and play with me! And I know how I can persuade her – she can earn up to $1600; that would buy me a lot of Dinner Bowls. The more we pet sit, the more money mummy can earn and the more furry friends I can make.

Make Every Day Fun

My pawrents say that the weekend is the best time because they don’t have any work or “responsibilities.” But the weekend is only TWO days, and the week is FIVE days. I told mummy that she needs to set this resolution with me and that in 2023 we should make every day fun.

She said I don’t understand because I don’t have to work. But I told her that doing even one fun thing each day would make the week so much better. She said that was a good point and asked me how we could make each day more fun. I had the perfect response.

“Let’s buy a Waggly Box,” I said. “They’ll deliver a little bit of fun to us every month and give us something to be excited about.” She thinks it looks pawsome, but I have to wait until Christmas Day before I’m allowed to open my first one. Still, that will make for a very Yappy Christmas.

Stress Less

Thinking about 2023 makes me feel su-paw because I have so much to look forward to; delicious dinners, new friends, and lots of toys and games to enjoy with my family. Still, with all that excitement, I’ll need time to unwind and relax each day.

Creating a calm environment is one of the best ways to alleviate stress, and having a space to retire to for afternoon naps would be an excellent way to relax and unwind. Usually, I take a nap on the couch, or sometimes on my pawrents bed, but I don’t feel like those spaces are mine, if you know what I mean.

I would love to have a bed all of my very own, so I’ve written a letter to Santa Paws and asked him to bring me a SASH calming bed for Christmas day. I chose this one because it looks so plush and soothing; I can picture myself unwinding there after a long day’s playing and feeling like I’m in heaven. And its durable, scratch-resistant nature means it will last me a long time.

My pawrents tell me I’ve been a good boy all year, so I have my paws and tail crossed that I’ve been a good enough boy for Santa to reward me with this treat.

Stay Healthy and Feel Good

My new balanced diet and exercise routine should make 2023 my healthiest year yet. Still, my dog-tor said I should check out Pet Chemist to provide me with treatments and supplements to be my best self.

After looking on their website, I realise that fresh breath oral care might be a doggone good idea and the chicken toothpaste sounds much tastier than mummy’s minty toothpaste, which is filled with toxic xylitol. There are so many products here that will make me a happier and healthier version of myself, and my pawrents can purchase my flea and worm treatments at the same time.

I can’t wait to get started on my 2023 New Year resolutions, which will begin shortly, after a visit from Santa Paws.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! And with less than a month to go, many people are already adorning their households with festive decorations. Still, as a pet parent, you might be considering the best ways to include your pup in the holiday celebrations.

This time of year is filled with exciting and unusual events in and around the house, providing dogs with a wealth of new stimulation, including various smells, tastes, and Christmas curiosities.

Join us as we explore the best ways to make this Christmas day memorable for your furry friend, where they can join in with the festive spirit and truly feel like a part of the family.

Make a Christmas-themed dog lunch for them to enjoy alongside the family

Delicious (and decadent) food is such a large part of our Christmas traditions that your pup is bound to feel a little left out if he doesn’t receive a special treat. Including your pets in your Christmas and New Year festivities means providing them with some (dog-friendly) delicacies they can enjoy eating while you have Christmas lunch.

You can make your own baked treats using simple ingredients such as flour, egg white, and chicken broth. Or you can treat them to the trimmings, including:

  • Unseasoned turkey breast
  • Plain chicken breast
  • Slices of carrot or apple
  • Xylitol-free peanut butter

Remember to keep treats in moderation; many of us may be guilty of overindulging at Christmas, but if you allow your dog to overeat or exercise too soon after eating, they could develop bloat, which is life-threatening. To avoid a Christmas day disaster, consider your dog’s portion sizes and check the labels of any human foods you plan on feeding them. Avoid onions, garlic, milk, dairy, macadamia nuts, walnuts, stuffing, chocolate, Christmas pudding, and mince pies.

To save time and stress, order a Mad Paws Dinner Bowl for your dog that includes animal nutritionist-approved ingredients and caters to your dog’s tastes. Let your dog enjoy a special Christmas lunch alongside his family.

Make sure your family gathering includes outdoor time

Considering the vast amount of food we consume over Christmas, it wouldn’t hurt us to get up off the couch in the afternoon and enjoy a festive walk around the neighbourhood. Not only will it help you combat the calories, but your pup will really appreciate it too.

In addition, remember that dogs thrive on routine – their schedule might change a little over Christmas, but engaging in some regular activities (such as a daily walk) can help keep them calm and happy.

Your dog will no doubt love interacting with the family and having new humans to play with their favourite toys. Still, providing your dog with a safe space to retreat is equally important if things get too much for them. Ensure they have a quiet place where they won’t be disturbed and can go whenever they feel overwhelmed. If you’re taking your dog to another house on Christmas day, take something familiar such as their dog bed, to help them feel calm in these unusual surroundings.

Wrap presents for them to open on xmas morning

Gifts aren’t just for humans, they’re perfect for your furry friends too. Wrapping up a special gift for your dog and placing it with the rest of the presents under the tree will help them understand that they are also a part of the family. Plus, it will give them something to be excited about when everybody else opens their gifts on Christmas day.

Some gift ideas include:

  • Treat balls
  • Puzzle feeders
  • Snuffle mats
  • Interactive toys
  • A new bed
  • Kong toy
  • Automatic ball launcher
  • Burrowing toy

If you want something special for your pup, give them a variety of toys and treats via a Waggly box, the gift that keeps on giving. Allow Waggly to curate the perfectly crafted box for your dog based on breed, size, age, and personality for an exciting package of goodies that your dog can look forward to receiving each month.

Include them in the family games

No Christmas day is complete without a “friendly” argument over the correct rules of Monopoly. Try keeping it light by including some games that your furry friend can play alongside you. Good options include chase, hide-and-seek, or tug or war.

If you want something a little different, try Round Robin. This simple game teaches your dog to follow commands and rewards them with a treat they’ll love. Have all family members sit in a circle and hold one treat each. Call your dog’s name one by one, and when they come to you, reward them with a treat.

At the end of the day, when everyone’s tired from the day’s festivities, there’s nothing nicer than curling up in front of the TV to watch a good movie. This is another activity where it’s easy to include your dog. Allow them to curl up next to you and give them a fuss while you watch something together. For a special treat, let them watch some “dog TV,” a great way to keep them entertained.

Make memories with your furry friend

When we think back to our childhood, Christmases often stand out as a magical time filled with family and fun, and you can create the same magical memories with your pup.

Try starting a new family tradition: walk around a nearby neighbourhood that goes all out on its Christmas decorations. Plant a new tree or plant in your garden (your dog will love helping you to dig out the foundations). Bake special treat foods together. Hang up a sensory stocking that gives them something new to sniff and lick on Christmas morning. Teach them a new trick. Spend quality time with one another.

And while you’re enjoying the day’s festivities, capture some of your favourite moments on camera. Your pup will love being the centre of attention, and you could snap a new family photo for next year’s Christmas cards.

Your guide to the best Christmas gifts for dogs and their humans

There’s no denying our dogs are part of the family, so Christmas (and birthday) gifts for dogs are a must. Likewise, if you’re stumped over what to get the dog lovers and fanatics in your family, the answer is simple. Get them something for their dogs!

Whether it’s dog toys or gift cards, a prescription for chef-prepared doggy meals, dog-themed gift boxes, or luxury beds, we have the best suggestions for unique gifts for dogs this festive season.

Feeding mats and snuffle mats

Have a food gobbler with an active mind? These mats double as a slow feed and a puzzle toy to provide enrichment while helping dogs who inhale their food to slow down. Simply scatter dry food in the folds, and allow your dog to forage naturally among the fleece strips for their treats. This is a great way to provide extra mental stimulation for your fur child.

KONG Toys

Any dog lover knows you can never have enough KONG toys. Whether you fill them with your dog’s food and freeze it or simply spray in some KONG Easy Treat Liver Recipe, the KONG is a go-to whenever you need to keep your dog busy. It’s also a lifesaver with teething and active puppies.

ZippyPaws Puzzler Feeder Bowl

Another fantastic puzzle toy, the ZippyPaws Puzzler Feeder Bowl helps keep dogs busy, slow their eating, and provide mental stimulation. A unique gift for dogs, it can hold up to three cups of food with sliding panels that add a challenge to dinner time. You can feed your dog their entire meal in one puzzle toy. (We also love the ice cream feeder bowl too!). The non-slip base holds the feed in place while slowing their eating to help prevent dangers like choking and bloat.

Book a day in Doggy Daycare!

If you’re still a little stumped, why not give a pet parent a break? Treat a pet to a fun, activity-filled day in a daycare, and give their Pawrent a much-deserved break. This is also a great option for those who feel guilty about leaving dogs home when they go to work in the new year.

And for those going away over the holidays, Mad Paws will help you find the best pet sitter in your area to care for your fur baby.

Donate to Homeless Animals

It is the season of giving, so let’s not forget about all the doggos and other furry friends in shelters. RSPCA has a great option to become a ‘guardian angel’ and donate to homeless animals in their shelters. You can make a donation on someone’s behalf, and even meet the fur friend your donation is helping!

Final thoughts

Don’t forget your four-legged friends this Christmas. Whether it’s a toy, gift box, new bed, or a subscription for healthy meals, a gift lets them share in the excitement. So if you were wondering what to get your good boy or girl, we hope these gift ideas for pets should help you find the paw-fect present.

Top 6 Dog Friendly TV Shows https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/top-6-dog-friendly-tv-shows/ https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/top-6-dog-friendly-tv-shows/#respond Tue, 30 Aug 2022 05:23:21 +0000 https://www.madpaws.com.au/blog/what-is-the-friendliest-dog-breed-copy/ With the Westminster Dog Show behind us, you might be looking for dog friendly tv shows to take your mind…

With the Westminster Dog Show behind us, you might be looking for dog friendly tv shows to take your mind off of the sorrowful lack of on-screen doggies. Don’t worry. We’ve got just the line up that will have your dog’s tail wagging while you prepare the popcorn.

Sit back and relax with these dog-tastic shows!

First of all, why these dog friendly tv shows?

If you caught our article on top dog-friendly movies, you’ll know that we are downright picky about the media we recommend for Dog Owners! In order for a show or movie to make our list, it has to check some of the following boxes:

  • Plenty of doggy stars. Your pupper is more likely to respond to shows that dedicate a lot of screen time to their doggy actors. So, we’ve picked shows with canine characters to get your doggo invested!
  • Dog-friendly scenery.  It’s not just doggy actors that will capture your pup’s attention! Your dog may respond more to nature shots, bird calls and the sounds of a babbling brook. Remember also, that dogs are best able to see yellows and blues, so you may find them more likely to be captivated by colours on that spectrum.
  • The perfect mood. Okay, sure. Your dog won’t really be following along with the plot. But they will be able to pick up on the emotional journey of their beloved Owner. So, while we’ve included some shows that pack an emotional punch, most are light-hearted!

Ready to see the dog friendly tv shows we can’t stop barking about? Here’s our list of series to snuggle up and watch with your dog!

#1: Dogs (Netflix)

If there’s one thing that can bring us together as humans, it’s a shared love for dogs. And with this heartwarming series on (hu)man’s best friend, you’ll get a glimpse of what dog ownership is like everywhere from Brazil to Syria to Japan. We’re not going to say that you won’t be sobbing at the end of some of these episodes, but in general, they’ll be happy tears!

#2: The Pack (Amazon Prime)

Looking for a show that will satisfy your travel bug? The Pack is an action-filled whirlwind of a show that pits dog-Owner teams against one another in a race to the finish line. Think of the drama of the Amazing Race, but with furry contestants. Truly, a brilliant move to remake such a popular show, but with dogs!

Unfortunately, the Pack was cancelled after just one season, due to mid-pandemic production challenges. But, you’ll be tempted to rewatch your favourite episodes over and over!

A fun fact about The Pack: while the show aired, it donated $250,000USD to animal rescue charities in the countries where filming took place. The winners of the competition (no spoilers!) were able to donate an additional $250,000USD to the animal charity of their choosing.

#3: Dogs with Jobs (Amazon Prime)

An oldie, but a goodie, Dogs with Jobs was a Canadian documentary series highlighting the many different canine careers that a dog can enter. The show ran for 5 seasons, with 65 episodes, so you can be sure that you’ll know every different kind of doggy job there is to know. And, you’ll meet some unforgettable furry characters along the way.

One thing that we adore about Dogs with Jobs is that it reminds us of all the amazing things our own doggos can do! Yes, even your lounge-loving Pug can learn how to wiggle through an obstacle course with the right encouragement—especially if there’s a bowl of delicious raw dog food at the end!

#4: Bluey (Disney+)

Bluey’s been a furry family favourite ever since it first aired in 2018. Whether you have a Blue Heeler at home or not, kids and doggos enjoy the whimsical tales of this Aussie Cattle Dog family.

If you’re looking for children’s programs that are as fun for the kiddos as they are for puppers and parents, Bluey is sure to put a smile on everyone’s face!

#5: Reality Dog Training with Zak George (YouTube)

Okay, this series isn’t technically a prime-time television show but rather a collection of videos from world-renowned dog trainer Zak George. Even so, you’ll find yourself completely invested in the main canine characters and looking forward to new episodes every week.

The series follows Zak as he works one-on-one with an untrained—and sometimes difficult—dog over the course of a few weeks leading up to their Adoption Day. The show is all about revealing the good, the bad, and the ugly of real-life dog training, so be ready to have all your own training struggles and accomplishments validated as you watch!

#6: Dug Days (Disney+)

Since it’s not out yet, there’s not much we can say about this upcoming Disney Plus show other than the fact that the trailer had us howling with anticipation!

If you watched the 2009 Pixar film, Up, you definitely remember Dug, the talking dog with an affinity for tennis balls and squirrels. In the new spinoff, you’ll get to see this lovable pup navigate his new life in the suburbs alongside his endearingly grouchy Owner.

Now, we have to be honest. In the 12 years since Up first came out, we were really hoping that technology would have given us real-life talking collars for our dogs. But alas, hearing Dug’s every adorable thought will have to do for now!

Which dog friendly tv shows are you most looking forward to?

With 6 amazing series just waiting to be binged, you and your pup are in for some brilliant tv watching. Pop the popcorn, serve up a bowl of your dog’s favourite raw food and settle in for an evening of entertainment!

Have some tv shows that capture your canine’s attention? We’d love to hear your suggestions for dog friendly tv shows!

Out of all the toys you’ve bought your pooch over the years, they gravitate to their squeaky toys time and time again. Tug-of-war rope? Nah. Plush toy? No, thanks. Rubber ball? Only if there’s a squeaker inside! So, why do dogs like squeaky toys so much?

Why do dogs like squeaky toys?

There’s no single answer to the question, “Why do dogs like squeaky toys?” As it turns out, there are a few different theories!

Squeaky toys tap into their instinct to hunt

Even though modern-day doggos are far different to their ancestors, they’ve retained their hunting instincts. Ever seen your dog going to town on an innocent plush rabbit? It’s highly likely they think it’s a real rabbit that they’ve caught themselves. Bless!

Squeaky toys tap into this very same instinct: the high-pitched noise emitted by these toys somewhat mimics the sound of terrified prey.

You may also find that your dog can’t help but try and tear their squeaky toy to shreds. This is in an effort to find – and destroy – the source of the squeak. To them, doing so means they’ve successfully slaughtered their prey.

why do dogs like squeaker toysThey make our pooches feel good

Squeaky toys could very well be giving our puppers an ego boost. Every time they chomp on their toy and it makes a squeaking sound, it’s a sign that they’ve given it their best, most effective bite.

Over time, that sound becomes a reward for your dog. It activates the reward centres in their brain, which triggers the release of dopamine – a hormone that makes them feel good. They’re then more likely to want to chew on it again and again and again and…

They might associate them with fun times

If your dog has ever started playing with a squeaky toy and you’ve subsequently picked it up to join in the fun, they’ve likely learned that squeaking noises equal good times.

Positive reinforcement is hugely influential on a dog’s learned behaviour. Every time you pick up the toy, your doggo starts to associate it with a play session. Eventually, they learn that by making the toy squeak, you’re more inclined to want to play with them.

They’re nice and chewy

Dogs love to chew. Be it on a fresh bone or your favourite pair of kicks, for dogs there are few things better than gnawing. Many squeaky toys double as excellent chew toys for dogs, because they’re often made with rubber or other tender materials. Or, they’re soft plush toys that dogs can easily sink their teeth into.

Bonus? Chew toys with squeakers are also great for your doggo’s oral health! They promote saliva production, and can reduce plaque build-up and prevent pet dental disease.

While not always the case, why do dogs like squeaky toys and then grow to be disinterested in them?

Much like how our interests change over time, so too do those of our puppers. When your dog is young, they might be drawn to fun squeaky toys, plush toys that they can snuggle with to cope with separation anxiety, and chew toys for the teething stage.

As they get older, many dogs prefer toys made with tougher materials or things they can chase around the park. And when they’re getting really old, they may circle back to soft toys because that’s all their senior teeth can handle.

Some dogs develop a life-long love of squeaky toys that carries through to old age. But, you still might want to switch up their toy selection depending on their life stage. In fact, some of the best dog toys are those that have been specifically tailored to a doggo’s age.

What should I do if my dog is scared of squeaky toys?

Some dogs can’t get enough of squeaky toys, but others aren’t so taken by them. The loud noise might scare them, or perhaps they’re simply not interested.

The good news is, if you’ve already bought a bunch of new squeaky toys, you can try and motivate your dog to play with them. See if you can engage them in a game of tug-of-war. Or, throw the toy and encourage your pooch to go and fetch it. Eventually, if they warm up to the toy enough, they might become accustomed to the sound.

There are also lots of different types of squeaky dog toys on the market. Some emit loud, shrill noises, while others are quieter and softer. Your pupper might prefer the latter. And if not? Well, luckily there are lots of other types of dog toys you can choose from!

squeaky dog toysImportant things to know about squeaky dog toys

When you give your doggo a squeaky toy, there are some important things to keep in mind.

Gauge your pooch’s playing and chewing style

Is your dog a gentle biter with little interest in destroying their toys? Or are they more likely to demolish every single toy in their collection? If your dog sits in the first camp, they should be okay with plush toys that squeak. If they sit in the second camp, you’re better off choosing squeaky toys made with harder rubber. Online dog toy and treat subscriptions like Waggly Club take the hassle out of finding the right toys for your doggo. Whether they’re a puppy, active dog or power chewer, you can have an endless supply of toys & all-natural treats shipped direct to your door!

Supervision is key

Even if you’re confident you’ve found the toughest squeaky toy on the market, supervision is a must. If your dog manages to rip the toy to shreds and find the squeaker, it could end up where it shouldn’t: in their throat or digestive system.

To minimise the chance of choking or another nasty incident, keep a close eye on your dog whenever they’re playing with a squeaky toy.

Make sure the toys are in good nick

Regularly inspecting your doggo’s toys will ensure you can swiftly remove those that have seen better days. If they’re visibly damaged, bits are coming off, or stuffing is coming out, get rid of them and replace them with fresh toys.

Train your dog to give up the toy if needed

Your pupper might get a little overzealous with their chewing, which puts them at greater risk of swallowing the tiny little squeaker. However, you may find it tricky trying to pry the toy out of your dog’s mouth. For them, this is a game, and why would they want to give up their freshly caught prey?

Instead, train your doggo with easy dog tricks like “drop it”. They’ll then hopefully be more inclined to let the toy go. If they don’t obey, you can try and entice them with a tasty treat to see if they’ll do a swap – something that, to your dog, is way more appealing than a half-ravaged squeaky toy!
