Did you know that walking your dog entails much more than just meandering around the streets of your neighbourhood? A walk is an effective way to stimulate your dog mentally and physically, but the key to a successful walk is understanding how to meet your dog’s needs while pounding the pavement!

There are multiple methods to approach a walk, structured, unstructured, a ‘sniffari’, agility, or decompression.  The various types of dog walks serve different purposes, and factors like age, health, energy levels, breed, and behaviour can impact the type of walk your dog needs.

Once you have all your dog walking essentials, like a harness, sturdy lead, poop bags and any ball launchers and other toys, you can head out and start your adventure. The goal of a walk is not to exhaust the dog – while exerting their energy is important, a tired dog is not always a happy dog.

So, let’s dig deeper into the different styles of dog walks you can enjoy with your furry friend.

Learn the 5 styles of dog walking

1. Structured

A structured walk is exactly what it sounds like! A structured dog walk achieves a specific goal or task. A structured walk can be as simple as getting into a routine, working on training such as loose leash walking or working on behavioural issues such as reactivity. A structured walk should only be done when the dog is in the green or yellow zone of learning, meaning their arousal levels are managed and they are capable of listening and it will be constructive.

levels of arousal in dogs2. Unstructured

An unstructured walk can be used to meet all kinds of needs – from simply getting in some exercise, engaging in play with other dogs, or as a bonding activity. An unstructured walk is the most common type of walk for dogs and, unless the pet has behavioural issues or quirks, provides an opportunity for the dog to meet their physical and mental needs at their own pace.

3. A Sniffari

A walk dedicated to mental stimulation, it simply provides an opportunity for the dog to follow their nose at their own pace to create calm but fulfilling mental stimulation. A sniffari should have no finish line, no time, distance, location or any other expectations and the lead should always be loose.

An agility walk is the next step to level up a walk, providing an opportunity for mental and physical stimulation to be combined. Ideal for high-energy dogs, such as working breeds you don’t need any fancy equipment or skills. You can simply use the kid’s play-ground at the park (if it’s empty of course) or your backyard. Teaching the dog to jump, manoeuvre around or explore different terrains, heights etc is an easy way to start and see if it’s right for them.

5. Decompression

An extremely important activity for every dog, decompression provides an opportunity for the dog to reduce stress, learn to self-settle, create healthy habits, maintain their mental well-being and much more. A sniffari is a type of decompression walk but there are plenty of other opportunities on a walk to decompress. For a dog, decompression can be: rolling in the grass, long line walks or other things specific to your dog’s personality.

So there you have it – now that you’re familiar with the different types of dog walks and their unique benefits, you can tailor your outings to suit your canine companion’s specific needs. Structured walks offer mental focus, unstructured walks provide freedom and bonding time, sniffaris and agility walks offer mental and physical challenges, while decompression walks ensure your dog’s overall well-being.

Each dog walking style has something special to offer, so mix and match to keep your dog engaged, happy, and healthy on every adventure. Remember, it’s not just a walk—it’s an opportunity to unleash the joy of exploration for your furry friend!

Need someone to take the leash?

We get it, with many responsibilities it can be challenging to find the time each day to take your furry friend for the walk they need and deserve. That’s why we have an abundance of Dog Walkers all around Australia, ready to take the lead.

RSPCA Million Paws WalkAs lovers of all things 4-legged and furry, it was only natural that support the RSPCA for their nationwide Million Paws Walk.

On Sunday 28 May 2023, we had a stall set-up at the up the Sydney Olympic Park location to support RSPCA’s work as well as raising awareness of our services.

The stage was set for a fur-bulous day out, with the Sydney weather turned on for all who came.

With the pup-arazzi on hand to take photos, snacks at the ready, and the sun shining, it was a paw-fect day to walk to raise awareness for RSPCA and the amazing work they do for animals in need.

And, we were able to raise $1,901 to help RSPCA fight against animal cruelty. That equates to 52 dogs who can now access a warm bed, love and care for one day in an RSPCA shelter.

We loved every second of the sniffs, licks and cuddles with all the furry friends we met 🐕

Check out some happy snaps from the day:

What is the RSPCA Million Paws Walk?

Last year, 20,000 dogs turned to the RSPCA for help. Many were victims of cruelty, bred to turn a profit, or abandoned by the humans they loved unconditionally. Even one dog is too many. Each step taken at the Million Paws Walk helps in their fight to bring that number down.

Fundraising to fight animal cruelty

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk:

  • Helps fund crucial community outreach programs about the importance of responsible pet ownership.
  • Helps put an end to the ugly roots of animal cruelty at the source.
  • Helps to grow and maintain RSPCA’s shelters and care for more and more pups in need.

How the donations help fight animal crueltyWe’re thrilled to have been able to raise $1,901 to help the RSPCA fight animal cruelty 🐾

Here’s a recap of how the donations from RSCPA Million Paws Walk help rescue, rehabilitate and re-home dogs in need.

The post Elbow Dysplasia In Dogs, Explained appeared first on Mad Paws.

]]>
If you notice your dog limping, it could be a sign of elbow dysplasia, a condition that causes pain and lameness due to the abnormal growth of the elbow joint. This can be caused by several factors, including genetics, nutrition, and environment.

When your dog is limping for more than a few days or if they seem to be in pain or discomfort, it’s important to take them to the vet as soon as possible so that a specialist perform tests such as x-rays to diagnose the cause of the limp and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Left untreated, elbow dysplasia can lead to arthritis and other complications. In this article, we will discuss the symptoms of elbow dysplasia in dogs, its causes, and treatments available for managing the condition.

What Is Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs?

Canine elbow dysplasia is an abnormal development of the elbow, characterised by irregular bone growth in which the three bones of the elbow joint fail to fit together correctly. This can lead to pain and discomfort for dogs, reduced mobility and other complications. Irregular weight distribution on the joint often leads to pain and lameness, leading to arthritis if not treated properly.

Elbow Dysplasia dog

Symptoms of dog elbow dysplasia include:

  • Your dog displays signs of pain when they bend or straighten the elbow joint
  • Occasional or persistent lameness, which is worsened by exercise
  • Decreased range of motion in the elbows
  • Swelling around the elbow joint
  • Difficulty standing up
  • Abnormal gait
  • Your dog is reluctant to play or go for a walk
  • There is a crackling sound when your dog bends or extends their elbow
  • Your dog holds their elbow at odd angles

What Causes Elbow Dysplasia?

Canine elbow dysplasia is a common condition in dogs that occurs when the bones of the elbow joint fail to develop correctly. Various factors, including trauma, nutritional deficiencies, defects in bone development, and hormonal influences, can cause it.

A dog’s elbow comprises three bones: the radius, humerus, and ulna. Four different skeletal conditions contribute to dog elbow dysplasia, a combination of which can be present in dogs diagnosed with this condition.

UAP – Ununited Anconeal Process

Ununited anconeal process is a condition in which the anconeal process, a part of the ulna, fails to fuse or detaches from the bone. When the growth plate fails to close, it causes a piece of bone to detach and irritate the joint. This can result in pain and swelling in the affected area, as well as difficulty with movement.

FCP – Fragmented Coronoid Process

Fragmented Coronoid Process is a condition in which a piece of bone in a dog’s elbow joint breaks off and irritates the joint lining, causing the cartilage to erode. This piece of bone is called the coronoid process, an essential part of the elbow joint in dogs. When this process fails to attach correctly, it can lead to discomfort, pain, and even lameness.

MCD – Medial Compartment Disease

Medial Compartment Disease is a condition that affects the joints in dogs. It occurs when there is abnormal pressure on the joint, which causes one joint to wear away the other. This can lead to bone exposure, pain and inflammation. MCD is considered one of the worst forms of dysplasia as it can cause severe pain and discomfort but can not be reversed. Further research is required to determine whether surgery may be a possibility in the future.

Osteochondrosis of the medial humeral condyle

Osteochondrosis of the medial humeral condyle in dogs is a condition that can cause pain and swelling in the shoulder joint. It occurs when the cartilage fails to turn into bone and replaces bone as the articulating surface. This can lead to inflammation and degeneration of the joint, causing pain for your pet.

How Is Dog Elbow Dysplasia Diagnosed?

Suppose you suspect your dog may have (or be at risk of developing) elbow dysplasia. In that case, you must book a consultation with your vet, who can examine your dog for any signs of pain and locate any areas of potential weakness or lameness.

There are several methods available for vets to diagnose this condition. They can use a physical exam to locate the source of pain, as well as x-rays of the affected limb (and sometimes the opposite limb for comparison). This helps them determine if any damage or deformity in the joint is causing the issue.

However, if nothing shows up on the x-ray images, vets may use CT scans or arthroscopy to better look at the affected area. These scans can provide more detailed pictures of the elbow joint that may reveal signs of elbow dysplasia.

With these tools, vets can accurately diagnose elbow dysplasia in dogs and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Early signs of elbow dysplasia can be challenging to identify, but getting an early diagnosis can help prevent osteoarthritis in your dog’s joints. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep an eye out for the following early warning signs:

  • Your dog occasionally walks with a limp, particularly if they’ve been running around or just stood up after lying down
  • Their elbow joint seems stiff and rotates outward when their front legs rotate inward
  • There is a crackling sound when your dog bends or stretches their elbow
  • Your dog becomes hesitant to engage in walks or playtime as they usually would

Elbow Dysplasia in DogsWhich Dog Breeds Are Vulnerable To Elbow Dysplasia?

Almost all dogs are susceptible to elbow dysplasia, but some breeds are more likely to develop this condition than others, particularly medium to large dog breeds like the following:

Treatment and Prevention For Elbow Dysplasia in Dogs

The treatment options for dog elbow dysplasia depend on the severity of the condition. Mild cases may be treated with anti-inflammatory drugs and joint supplements to reduce inflammation and pain. But, if the condition is more severe, surgery may be required to correct the underlying problem. In either case, regular check-ups with a veterinarian are important to monitor your dog’s progress and adjust treatment accordingly.

Joint supplements are an excellent way to promote healing through decreased inflammation and increased water retention (to provide more cushioning for the joint). In addition, they are an excellent way to reduce the risk of your pup developing elbow dysplasia in the first place.

Popular options include the following:

  • Antinol: a natural joint supplement that helps improve your dog’s mobility and assists in relieving the symptoms of arthritis. This fast-acting supplement has no known side effects and can provide results in as little as ten days. It can also be used in conjunction with a range of other medications.
  • 4CYTE: a plant oil extract used for cartilage regeneration. This can be highly effective in helping pre and post-op dogs and those with pre-existing osteoarthritis or stiff joints.
  • PAW By Blackmores Joint Care: highly palatable dog chews that are easy to administer and offer a balanced combination of nutrients for joint health. These are ideal for pups showing signs of limping, stiffness, or reluctance to engage in playtime.

It’s important to remember that if you intend to administer drugs or supplements to your dog, you should always consult with your vet first.

Other steps to help prevent your dog from developing this condition include keeping your dog healthy through regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and regular vet check-ups. Providing your dog with the right nutrition and supplements can also help reduce the risk of elbow dysplasia. Taking these preventive measures can help ensure your dog stays happy and healthy for years.

Regular exercise is one of the most important factors in maintaining healthy bodies and minds through weight management, increased energy levels, better sleep, and improved mental health. As with many things, the same can be applied to our dog too.

Daily walks allow your dog to stretch their legs, build muscle, and get the blood pumping. In addition, this exercise provides your dog stimulation and enrichment and can help reduce problem behaviours.

Still, with hectic schedules and busy lifestyles, it can be challenging for owners to commit to the required amount of exercise that dogs need on a daily basis. Fortunately, we have the perfect solution.

How Much Exercise Do Dogs Need?

Your dog’s daily exercise needs depend on a number of factors, including age, breed, weight, health condition, and diet. Still, aiming to give your dog an hour of exercise each day is a great starting point for maintaining good health.

In general, a puppy will have higher energy levels and, therefore, more significant exercise requirements than an adult or senior dog, so it’s important to consider the breed of dog you adopt into your home and ensure that you can meet their daily needs. These young pups often have short bursts of energy (which you may recognise as a case of the zoomies), so it’s a good idea to schedule short bursts of high-energy exercise rather than one long walk, which could be tiring for their developing bodies.

At the other end of the spectrum, senior dogs will generally have reduced exercise needs as their body slows down with age. Exercise is crucial at any stage of life, but shorter, more gentle bouts of activity are best suited to ageing dogs – particularly those with health issues.

Again, regardless of your dog’s age, their exercise needs can vary depending on breed and general health. If you’re unsure how much exercise your dog requires, you can schedule a check-up with your vet. You can also monitor your dog’s sleep and engagement in everyday life to ensure you provide them with the optimum amount of exercise.

dog walking Pet SitterWhat Is The Best Exercise For My Dog?

You can enjoy many exercises with your dog, though a good walk is always a great place to start. Taking your dog for a stroll is a great way to get their body moving, breathe in the fresh air, and experience the stimulation of the outside world. Additionally, it is a low-impact exercise that is easy to tailor to your dog’s needs. For example, if you have a high-energy dog, you could take a jog or cycle while your dog runs alongside. Or, you could find a place to take a break halfway through the walk and engage your dog in a game of fetch.

Swimming is another popular exercise for dogs of all ages and abilities. Even senior dogs with arthritis and similar ailments can enjoy the benefits of a hydrotherapy pool. On rainy days, you can play games like hide and seek or tug-of-war. You can also incorporate obedience training, scent work, and other activities into your daily routine to vary the exercise, increase enrichment, and strengthen the bond between you and your dog.

What Are The Benefits Of Exercise For My Dog?

Dogs have an abundance of energy that they have to direct somewhere; if you don’t provide them with a suitable outlet for this energy, it can quickly evolve into problem behaviours such as excessive chewing, barking, and anxiety-related behaviours. Along with preventing unwanted behaviours in your pup, exercise provides several important health benefits:

It keeps them fit and healthy.

Regular exercise helps your dog stay in shape and maintain their fitness levels. This helps to prevent obesity and its associated health issues while keeping your dog fit enough to engage in their favourite games.

Maintains healthy joints.

Taking your dog for regular walks helps to keep their joints moving and ease any pain they might be feeling. This exercise also helps to strengthen the muscles surrounding the joints, providing better support and helping to prevent conditions such as arthritis.

Supports mental health.

Not only does exercise release feel-good endorphins, but getting outside and exploring a new environment also provides vital enrichment for your dog. They will love exploring the new smells, sounds, and sights on offer. Plus, being around other people, dogs, and animals can help them socialise and feel less anxious when meeting new people.

It helps maintain healthy digestion.

Regular walks aren’t just a good form of exercise; they also allow your dog to go to the toilet. Giving them regular access to toileting areas can help to eliminate constipation and prevent urinary infections from developing.

Builds their bond and confidence.

Getting outside and going for walks is a great way to develop your dog’s confidence while strengthening the bond between you. Mixing up sessions to incorporate playtime is another excellent way to build on your relationship. And this increase in confidence can help to reduce separation anxiety.

How Can I Ensure That My Dog Is Getting Enough Exercise?

Ensuring your dog gets enough exercise is critical for their physical and mental wellbeing. Still, setting aside a dedicated hour each day can be challenging with work, kids, and other responsibilities. And that’s where Mad Paws dog walking services can help.

There are probably certain days of the week when many things are happening all at once: work meetings, kid’s recitals, sports gatherings, etc. Whatever the reasons, there will be days when you struggle to prioritise your pup. But maintaining a regular walking schedule is one of the best ways to ensure your dog gets enough exercise.

On these busy days, why not hire a dog walker? This way, you can focus on your other responsibilities while feeling satisfied that your dog is having their needs met too. Best of all, you can set up a repeat booking to avoid facing the same set of worries each week.

What Are The Benefits Of Setting Up Repeat Bookings?

Mad Paws offers reliable and trusted sitters who will conduct a meet and greet before you entrust your precious pup to their services. Once you’ve found the right walker for your dog, you can set up a repeat booking to make life that little bit easier. This offers several benefits for you and your pup, including:

  • You can set a schedule so that your dog has a consistent and fulfilling exercise routine
  • You can get to know the walker better and increase your trust in them
  • You don’t have to worry about messaging back and forth each week to secure a walker
  • As the walker gets to know more about your dog, they can tailor their programme to meet your dog’s needs specifically

Friend. Confidant. Exercise Partner. Cuddle Buddy. Wake Up Call. Our pets are many things to us; most importantly, they’re family members. But, much as we’d like to take them everywhere with us, there are some places where we have to go alone.

At Mad Paws, we’re famous for our quality pet-sitting service. Trusted local sitters have helped us grow into Australia’s leading pet-sitting community – You can leave your beloved pet(s) in the hands of a vetted guardian who will provide them with the extra special treatment they deserve.

But did you know that pet sitting isn’t our only service? From grooming services to doggy daycare, Mad Paws can step in when you’re busy to ensure your four-legged companions never have to feel alone.

How Does Mad Paws Work?

We understand that pets are a part of the family – You can’t take a relaxing vacation without finding the perfect guardian for your pet. Still, if you’re fed up with begging family members or worrying that your friend/neighbour isn’t up to the job, Mad Paws can offer you the paw-fect solution.

We work by connecting you to experienced sitters in your local area, each vetted to ensure they can provide the highest level of care. Not only do we offer a trusted service, we also celebrate the individuality of companion animals and encourage our sitters to provide personalised care plans that you can tailor to create the perfect experience for your pet.

Simply enter your postcode (or search by area) and look at the profiles of sitters in your area. Once you narrow down the candidates to the personalities that match your pet’s needs, you can arrange a meet and greet to check they’re the perfect match for your pet before finalising the booking.

And that’s not all. Mad Paws doesn’t just offer dog services; we can also help match you with sitters to care for cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, and birds. So whatever your pet-sitting requirements, we’ve got you covered.

What’s The Difference Between Pet Hosting And Pet Sitting?

When searching for pet sitters in your area, you’ll notice that next to “location,” you can also choose a “service.” Two are “pet hosting” and “pet sitting,” but what’s the difference?

Pet Hosting allows your pet to take a vacation of their own and stay with one of our trusted sitters. The big difference between a Mad Paws host and a commercial cattery/kennel is the level of personal attention and care your pet will receive. Businesses provide a standard level of care to each animal, ensuring their basic needs are met – but when you select a pet host from Mad Paws, you can handpick the right placement for your pet’s personality.

You can choose between cosy and secure properties or open and spacious ones with large areas to roam. Some hosts specialise in caring for one type of pet and may have modifications to the property to house their animals of choice, such as climbing walls for cats or outdoor runs for rabbits. Not only can you select the perfect vacation house for your pet, but you can also talk directly to the host each day with photo feedback and special requests. This way, you can sit back and enjoy your vacation, knowing that your pet is also receiving 5-star treatment.

But not all pets enjoy vacations; some are homebodies who feel calm in their own space. That’s why pet Sitting involves one of our sitters staying at your home. We know how sacred your living space is, so we provide only the highest-quality sitters so that you can rest assured that your home is in good hands.

The benefits of employing a pet sitter are that you can find someone to look after your home (and other living species like plants, fish, and aquariums), and your pets get to stay in the comfort of their home. This is particularly beneficial for animals such as indoor cats, who may experience increased anxiety if taken from their home. Pet sitting means your pets can experience the luxury of being home while having an experienced sitter on hand to cater to their every need.

Pet Sitting, how does Mad Paws workWhat Other Services Do Mad Paws Offer?

Mad Paws doesn’t just provide services when you take a vacation – we connect you with the right individuals to create an ongoing care plan and routine for your beloved pets. From walking services to doggy daycare, here are some other services we offer.

Doggy (Pet) Daycare

You wouldn’t leave a child home alone all day, so why would you leave your pet? Our daycare services are the perfect solution to work around your routine and lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for someone to add a couple of extra play sessions during the week or you need someone to provide food and care for your pets at certain times of the day or week, you’ll find everything on our website.

Dog Walking

If we had our way, we’d dedicate most of every day to our pups, playing games and taking them for walks. Still, many of us have families, jobs, and other responsibilities that demand significant time and attention.

Sometimes these responsibilities can get in the way of your dog walking duties, which is where our walking service comes in handy. Even if you have time, you might find that you’re exhausted after long days at work, and you would love to find someone to share this task with you so that you can take a night off.

Our experienced walkers are happy to structure their service around your and your pet’s needs, making them the perfect option no matter your circumstanceDog Walker, Pet Sitting

Dog Grooming

Make sure your dog always has a good hair day with our range of grooming services. Whether you’ve got a long-haired pet who has high maintenance needs or you’re looking for a one-off groomer to prep your pet for a special event, we’ve got you covered. Select from services like a wash, blowdry, nail trim or clip and have your dog feeling like a million dollars.

And you can even find cat groomers or cat spa experiences to provide a luxury experience for other pets.

Dog Training

Training your pup is simple enough in theory but often much more challenging in practice. To get the best results, you want to combine your love and care for your dog with a thorough knowledge of canine behaviours – and that’s where Mad Paws comes in.

We’ll connect you to experienced and professional individuals who can assist you with regular dog trainer practices. Allow your precious pup to play confidently by attending a meet and greet first to get to know your trainer and see if they are the right fit. By following this process, you can relax knowing that your dog is in capable hands and build up a consistent routine to get the best out of them.

House Visits

If you have independent pets who act as companions to one another, you might think that 24-hour care is excessive. Still, if you want to take a long weekend without your pets, our pet care services offer you the chance to have a professional sitter pop into your home a couple of times each day to top up food and water and attend to any other basic needs of your pet.

Mad Paws is much more than a dog-sitting agency; it’s a service that connects animal-loving individuals to ensure that every pet receives the care they deserve. From nail trims to vacations, you can find everything you need to meet your pet’s needs while attending to everyday life’s responsibilities.

A letter from your fur friend:

My human tells me that it’s almost time to say goodbye to 2022 and welcome in a brand new year. She said this is the perfect time to reflect on the last 12 months and decide my resolutions for 2023.

I didn’t understand what “resolutions” meant until my pawrents explained that they are a sort of to-do list or goals I want to achieve over the next year.

So I’ve been thinking a lot about 2022, and even though it was lots of fun, I think next year can be even better. If you and your pawrents are writing resolutions for 2023, here are some ideas that might inspire you.

Expand My Diet and Eat Healthily

Eating is one of my favourite things to do, but sometimes I get bored of the same foods day in and day out. When I asked the dog-tor whether or not my diet is important, she said that balancing my nutrition would keep me fit and healthy (which means I’ll have the energy to play lots more games) and could extend my life (which is pawsome because it means I’ll get to see even more new years)!

So one day, when my pawrents went to work, I barked at Alexa and asked her to find me the best doggy foods around. She suggested I try something called “Dinner Bowl” by Mad Paws, which is fantastic because it has recipes crafted by pet nutritionists (and those humans know exactly which foods I need to keep me healthy).

My pawrents said we could start ordering from Mad Paws THIS week, making me very excited! They said the meals are nutritious, affordable, and easy. I don’t know what “affordable” means, but I’m guessing it’s something good. And I’ve chosen my first bowl already! I’m going to have the “Live Laugh Lamb” packed with tasty chunks of meat and vitamin-rich vegetables like carrot, sweet potato, broccoli, and spinach.

I chose this because it looks yummy, AND I like the name. Living and laughing are everything I want for 2023.

Socialise More

I’m sitting by the window, waiting for my humans to come home and thinking about how much fun I will have on tonight’s walk. Do you know why I enjoy walkies so much? Not only do I get to explore hundreds of new sights and smells, but I also get to see other dogs – and that’s pretty fun!

My humans are pawsome, and I love them with all my heart, but playing with them is not the same as playing with other dogs. Sometimes my human talks about her “friends” and how much she enjoys spending time with them. I think I might like to make new friends and spend time with them.

Then, as I watch through the window, I see a human walk past with not one, not two, but five doggies! I barked over to them and asked if she was their mummy. They said, “No, she’s our pet sitter.”

“Pet sitter?” I thought to myself. “I wonder what that means…” Well, I’ve discovered exactly what it means, and it is paws-itively brilliant. Mummy can sign up as a pet sitter, and other doggies will come to our house and play with me! And I know how I can persuade her – she can earn up to $1600; that would buy me a lot of Dinner Bowls. The more we pet sit, the more money mummy can earn and the more furry friends I can make.

Pet Walking Pet Sitting

Make Every Day Fun

My pawrents say that the weekend is the best time because they don’t have any work or “responsibilities.” But the weekend is only TWO days, and the week is FIVE days. I told mummy that she needs to set this resolution with me and that in 2023 we should make every day fun.

She said I don’t understand because I don’t have to work. But I told her that doing even one fun thing each day would make the week so much better. She said that was a good point and asked me how we could make each day more fun. I had the perfect response.

“Let’s buy a Waggly Box,” I said. “They’ll deliver a little bit of fun to us every month and give us something to be excited about.” She thinks it looks pawsome, but I have to wait until Christmas Day before I’m allowed to open my first one. Still, that will make for a very Yappy Christmas.

Stress Less

Thinking about 2023 makes me feel su-paw because I have so much to look forward to; delicious dinners, new friends, and lots of toys and games to enjoy with my family. Still, with all that excitement, I’ll need time to unwind and relax each day.

Creating a calm environment is one of the best ways to alleviate stress, and having a space to retire to for afternoon naps would be an excellent way to relax and unwind. Usually, I take a nap on the couch, or sometimes on my pawrents bed, but I don’t feel like those spaces are mine, if you know what I mean.

I would love to have a bed all of my very own, so I’ve written a letter to Santa Paws and asked him to bring me a SASH calming bed for Christmas day. I chose this one because it looks so plush and soothing; I can picture myself unwinding there after a long day’s playing and feeling like I’m in heaven. And its durable, scratch-resistant nature means it will last me a long time.

My pawrents tell me I’ve been a good boy all year, so I have my paws and tail crossed that I’ve been a good enough boy for Santa to reward me with this treat.

Stay Healthy and Feel Good

My new balanced diet and exercise routine should make 2023 my healthiest year yet. Still, my dog-tor said I should check out Pet Chemist to provide me with treatments and supplements to be my best self.

After looking on their website, I realise that fresh breath oral care might be a doggone good idea and the chicken toothpaste sounds much tastier than mummy’s minty toothpaste, which is filled with toxic xylitol. There are so many products here that will make me a happier and healthier version of myself, and my pawrents can purchase my flea and worm treatments at the same time.

I can’t wait to get started on my 2023 New Year resolutions, which will begin shortly, after a visit from Santa Paws.

Whether you or your local Dog Walker are taking your pooch to the dog park, a harness is a great way to keep your pupper safe en route. But take one look at a harness and you may feel a little overwhelmed by its many straps and clasps. We get it; compared to a simple collar and lead, dog harnesses are no mean feat. So, you may well be wondering how to put on a dog harness properly.

We’re here to help you navigate these often perplexing contraptions.

Why is it so crucial to know how to put on a dog harness?

Aside from the satisfaction of putting on a dog harness properly, there are several reasons why it’s important to know how to fit one.

Firstly, a poorly fitted harness can be downright uncomfortable for your dog. This might cause them to pull on the harness in an effort to reduce their discomfort. It can also cause your doggo to skew their walking style or lean to one side. Both of these may lead to muscle and structural problems. And lastly, if a harness just isn’t fitting right, your doggo might be able to easily slip out of it.

What types of harnesses are available?

When it comes to purchasing a harness, you’ve got almost endless choices. There are varying styles, prints, fits, leash attachments, accessories, and more. Generally speaking, though, harnesses fit into a couple of main categories:

  • Overhead harnesses. With an overhead harness, the harness goes over your doggo’s head. The harness is then fastened behind their front legs
  • Step-in harnesses. A step-in harness allows your dog to step into the leg loops before you strap the harness around their back. It’s ideal if they don’t like things going around their heads. In many cases, step-in harnesses are easiest to put on, but this really depends on your doggo’s harness preference

Within each of these harness types, there are also different leash attachments. A back-clip harness allows you to affix the leash to the back of the harness. A front-clip harness, on the other hand, has the leash sitting at the front. It’s a great option if your dog is an aggressive leash-puller. Then there are some harnesses with a dual-clip mechanism, where you can clip the leash on the front or back.

A step-by-step guide on how to put on a dog harness

Now that we’ve established the basics, it’s time to learn how to put on a dog harness!

Step 1: Make sure the harness is the right size for your doggo

Along with the wide variety of harnesses you can buy, there are many different sizes available. Unfortunately, sizes aren’t always uniform across various brands and styles. To ensure you buy the right harness, measure your dog’s height, weight, and the circumference of their neck and girth. You can then use each harness’s fit guide to work out which one is best.

Step 2: Keep calm before putting the harness on

You want your dog to be in a relaxed state before putting on a harness for the first time. Familiarise them with the harness by allowing them to sniff it. Then, sit down next to your dog while they’re standing still. This will make the process much easier on both of you. And make sure you’re feeling relaxed too, as your dog will likely feed off your emotions.

Step 3: Time to get that harness on!

It might seem obvious, but the first step is to ensure the harness is pointing in the right direction. If you’ve bought either a front or back-clip harness, your job here is easy. If you’ve got a dual-clip harness, check the harness’s instructions for a diagram.

Putting on an overhead harness? Simply place the harness over your dog’s head and ensure the chest piece is lying flat against their chest. Next, do up the straps around your dog’s body, just behind their front legs.

If you’re using a step-in harness, lay it flat on the floor. Then, place your dog’s two front paws into the appropriate loops. Once they’re in, pull the harness up and strap it around their back.

Step 4: Check the fit

Before you leave the house, let your doggo walk around in the harness. Observe their movements, gait, and any obvious issues. If anything looks awry, you can easily adjust the straps until you get the right fit.

Make sure the harness is snug, but not too snug. You should be able to slip two fingers into the straps, and the chest piece shouldn’t sag at all. Your doggo should also move around comfortably and freely, without being able to slip out of the harness.

Tips for dealing with particularly wriggly or reluctant dogs

Even with these basic steps up your sleeve, you might still have a doggo who’d rather wiggle away from their harness than put it on. Or, they might just be a little sceptical of it. So, what can you do?

Start slow

A three-hour hike may be a bit of a tall order during your dog’s first harness experience. Instead, start by simply letting them get familiar with it.

Once it’s strapped on, let your dog roam around the house for a while. Then, around the garden. Then, attach a leash and let them explore the house and garden. Then, go around the block, and finally, on a longer walk. Eventually, that three-hour hike might very well be possible.

Use positive reinforcement

You want your pooch to equate the harness to good times. Positive reinforcement is a great way to do this, as it builds a favourable association between your dog and the harness. On the other hand, studies show negative reinforcement does the opposite and can damage your pup’s physical and mental health. So, every time you put on the harness, give your pupper praise, a belly rub, or their favourite treat. They’ll hopefully soon start to enjoy both the process and the result of wearing the harness.

Call in an expert

If all else fails, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with calling in a professional dog trainer. They can help get your doggo used to wearing a harness by implementing specialised training techniques. Eventually, your pooch may come to love their harness – and the fun walks that come with it!

As a Dog Owner, you probably already know how much dogs improve your mental health. How can you not have a smile on your face when your furry friend is around?! But what exactly is happening in our brains that make us light up around dogs?

Is there scientific research to back up the claim that dogs are the perfect mood-boosters? In this article, we’re going to take a deep dive into the mental health benefits of Dog Ownership. Here are eight ways that our furry friends help us feel better ♡

Dogs Improve Your Mental Health

#1: Dogs boost feel-good chemicals

Our dogs make us happy – it’s just a fact! And according to the research, it’s happening on a neurochemical level.

Every time you interact with your dog, whether it’s through play, cuddling, or simple eye contact, your brain releases oxytocin. This brain chemical is responsible for feelings of trust, empathy, and relationship-building. When it’s released in the brain, we get that warm, fuzzy feeling that makes us say, “Who’s a good doggy?” every time we see our pup.

And it’s not just oxytocin that’s bouncing around in our brains when our dogs enter the room. Dopamine, another neurochemical that’s released when we interact with dogs, helps us to feel happy, alert, and motivated. So, when you’re having trouble staying focused at work, who knows; you may just need a play break with your pup!

#2: Dogs relieve stress

If you’ve had a ruff day, your first instinct might be to put your feet up and have a good cuddle session with your dog. And, that’s actually a great idea!

According to a study released in 2011 featuring Dog Owners and Labradors, the act of petting your dog can reduce the levels of the stress hormone cortisol in the blood, while also lowering heart rate. Scientists believe this is because calm tactile interaction with animals is a stress-reducing activity.

Keep in mind, though, that our doggos tend to be sensitive to our own stress levels! If you’re coming home as a ball of stress everyday, your fur friend might experience an increase in stress, themselves. So, you might opt for a stress-reducing activity that is good for you and your furbaby, like exercise or a walk.

#3: Dogs ease loneliness

The fact that we call doggos (hu)man’s best friend says it all. Dogs are wonderful companions!

After all, even if you’ve got a traditionally independent dog, it’s comforting to be in the presence of a friend. And, dogs give us a sense of belonging, trust, and purpose. They rely on us for food, walkies, and playtime, which makes us feel more connected, therefore, less lonely.

Again, there’s a neurochemical element at play here, too. Remember that oxytocin makes us feel that all is right in the world, but it’s is also a key neurochemical for relationship building. Every time we interact with our dogs, we’re reminded of how wonderful it is to have a friend.

#4: Dogs introduce us to new people

On the one paw, our dogs ease our loneliness by being our constant companions. But our fluffy friends also expose us to a whole new network of people that we may otherwise have never met.

Whenever you leave the house with your doggo, for instance, you may meet other dog lovers on the sidewalk, at restaurants, and dog-friendly events. If you and your pup tend to visit the same places consistently, you might also start to build relationships with your community members, including neighbours and business owners.

And of course, there’s the network of other Dog Owners and Dog Sitters with whom you can bond over the joys and challenges of Dog Ownership.

#5: Dogs improve your mental health by getting you outside

Whether your puppy is dragging you out of bed at sunrise, you’re exploring nature with your energetic dog, or simply stepping into the backyard to play a quick game of fetch, your dog is giving you a wonderful gift: outside time!

According to a collection of research, being outside has been linked to short- and long-term mental health benefits, including stress resiliency and a decreased risk of depression.

If you can get you and your doggo to a place where the sounds of nature resound, even better! Bird calls, crashing waves, wind through the trees, and other nature sounds are great for relaxation.

exercise ideas for you and your dog#6: And they get you moving, too!

Going outside with your dog provides you the benefit of stress-relief and relaxation. But when you can get outside and move, you’re opening up a whole additional layer of mental (and physical) health benefits.

Exercise and mental wellbeing are closely related, and even mild activities can release an array of feel-good neurochemicals. Serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine are three main neurochemicals that are released during exercise, giving you both short-term happiness and long-term satisfaction.

The key is to find a form of exercise that you enjoy doing with your dog. Whether it’s brisk walking, bicycle riding, or going for a jog, choose an activity that you and your pup can return to regularly. The more consistent you are with your outdoor adventures, the better your mental health will be in the long term.

#7: Dogs help you snooze

It’s something we’ve known for thousands of years: having a dog around makes us feel relaxed and protected. And that’s why having a dog in the home may actually give you better sleep.

Women, in particular, experience a significant improvement in sleep from sharing a bed with their furry friend, according to research from Canisius College in New York. The results show that women may get a better night’s sleep next to a dog than a human partner!

In terms of mental health, the benefits of quality sleep are numerous. Consistent sleep can reduce the effects of depression, anxiety, and a number of other mental illnesses. And, it can improve self-esteem and cognitive functioning. The keyword here, of course, is quality. If your pupper is interrupting your sleep, take a look at our article, How to Train Your Dog to Sleep Through the Night

And remember, your dog will sleep better when they’re in the presence of a caring human, too! If you’re going to be gone for the night, make sure your pup stays with a friendly local Dog Sitter.

#8: Your dog makes you laugh!

It’s easy to overlook this final mental health benefit of Dog Ownership, but the truth is, humour is healing. Laughing releases a flood of feel-good chemicals in the brain, like endorphins, while also decreasing stress chemicals. Humour can instantly change our moods and block feelings of anger and frustration. And, it can help us connect with others, especially if they also witnessed that very funny doggy moment.

So, the next time your dog makes you laugh, take a moment to acknowledge how lucky you are to have a health-boosting comedian living under the same roof!

The science is clear: dogs improve your mental health in all kinds of ways

We can bet that you already knew just how much dogs improve your mental health. Now that you’ve seen the research, let us know which furry fact surprised you the most!

Chances are, you probably know someone who has a fondness for old catchphrases. When they’re feeling good, they’re “as happy as a clam”. If they’re RSVPing to an event, they’re “in like Flynn”. And when they want to tell you how healthy they are, they’ll say they’re “as fit as a butcher’s dog”.

These days, people mostly use the phrase to refer to healthy humans. However, back in the day, the expression saw a very literal use. In this piece, we explore the meaning of “as fit as a butcher’s dog”. More importantly, we highlight how your furry friend can reach this standard of health.

As Fit as a Butcher's Dog ‘Firstly, what does “as fit as a butcher’s dog” actually mean?’

In the days of yesteryear, the butcher’s pooch enjoyed a reputation as the strongest, hardiest dog in the neighbourhood. Their renown as super-fit hounds stemmed from their diet; thanks to their Owners’ careers, they were able to enjoy fresh cuts of raw beef and other meats every day. Because of their high-protein diets, the myth explained, these dogs grew muscles and immune systems that other pooches envied.

Now, we know that there’s more to canine health than a 100% raw beef diet. However, if you take the steps below, your pupper may live up to the legend.

“How can I make my furry friend as fit as a butcher’s dog?”

Exercise them a bit (but not too much) beyond their comfort zone

Every dog breed is unique, which means that every pupper’s road to fitness will be slightly different. For instance, if you have a British Bulldog, they may be content with a five-minute walk each day. While two-hour daily bush walks will likely cause them health problems, a short walk followed by a light game of “fetch” will challenge them in an achievable way. In contrast, a working breed Border Collie generally requires 8km of walking each day. If you’re looking to improve their fitness, an extra game of “fetch” alone may not cut it. Instead, you may want to consider enrolling them in agility training.

Regardless of your dog’s breed, tailor their exercise to their specific needs. Find their daily requirements, push them a little bit further, and watch their strength grow.

Keep them busy during the day

Daily exercise is well and good, but it only counts for so much. In fact, while physical movement is crucial for dogs, it’s no more important than mental enrichment. For this, you’ll want to keep your furbaby occupied during the day. After all, if they spend nine hours on their own while you’re at work, they’ll likely become anxious or lethargic – both of which are foes to fitness.

Should your work keep you away from your pooch each day, it’s worth enrolling them in Doggy Day Care. That way, they’ll have other humans (and dogs!) to engage their bodies and minds while you’re out. The result will be a sharper, more psychologically balanced pet, who will be one step closer to their fitness goals.

Serve them a high-protein diet

As we mentioned above, a high-protein diet isn’t the only route to furry fitness. However, it will give your furbaby the fuel they need to embark on that route. Like in human diets, proteins and amino acids provide our dogs with the foundations for muscle growth. This will not only augment your doggo’s strength – it will also protect their organs and maintain their mobility into later years. For a protein-rich diet, look to dog meals featuring meat and dog-friendly vegetables, or certain kinds of top-tier kibble.
