My Labrador knows he’s the Dog’s Bo’s because total strangers tell him so, on average about twice a month someone will complement his Dogfullness Most Highness. I swear he thinks I can’t help it, I’m just me?

I take my dog to the mirror at least once a day and have him look at himself. I say “that’s you!”. I remember one time I gave him a bath first then took him to the mirror. His hair was a wet mess, looks like a totally different dog when wet. He looked and looked in the mirror for a long time. Most of the time he doesn’t look that long.

In reply to Riverwolfxo. Some dogs know their reflections. Ironically, I saw my dog make a shadow puppet today. This dog knows what a mirror is but forgets sometimes when encountering a mirror in a new setting. She’s an American Bulldog

In reply to Riverwolfxo. Thanks for the comment and info. I thought that the mirror test may flawed for dogs but did not know of any other tests. Makes sense because dogs are scent driven.

Another scientific study has been done recently beyond the mirror test (can’t remember the exact one – I read it in a book called “Being a Dog”) that suggest dogs CAN recognise themselves and that the mirror test is not accurate because dogs actually superficially recognise themselves by smell and not by vision as humans do. Essentially the study proved that the way we look at ourselves in the mirror and say “that’s me” is exactly the same for dogs to urinate on a tree, smell and think “that’s me”. Dogs are way smarter that we often give them credit for.
